I have created this thread in memorial my mother whom passed away of Esophageal Cancer about 4:30am on June 21st at the age of 58.

I am not creating this thread for condolences or pitty. I am creating this thread more for awareness to those who live their lives unaware. My wife's mother passed away of Breast Cancer at the age of 57 and my uncle passed away of Prostate Cancer in his 50s also. This is not uncommon as well over a half a million American's die each year. That does not include the rest of the world.

Today, I ask everyone to reflect on is. After you reflect, think about donating to the American Cancer Society. I'm not asking you to do this because of my mothers passing. I ask you to do it for everyone that is still struggling or will struggle with cancer in the future. It need not be a large amount. If 1,000,000 people only donated $5, that is $5 million dollars. That can help a whole lot of people and possibly save a lot of people. Even someone you know.

I've made many donations to many different charities over the years. ACS was never one of them. That will no longer be the case.

My sympathies, bro. I do know a little of what you went through.

My Father died at the age of 61 with lung cancer, while I was in college. It was a terrible experience for him. I moved home to help my mother because she couldn't do everything on her own that needed to be done. He lasted a little over a year from diagnosis to death. He dwindled down from over 200 pounds to 94 pounds in one year.

By the end, the man who was the toughest man in the world to me when I was young... had to be carried around in my arms to do anything but lay down and get bedsores. The cancer had gotten into his spinal cord and paralized him from the hips down.

I'll spare the more gruesome details, but suffice it to say, it is a terrible, terrible sickness.

And I've been giving to the American Cancer Society since then, when I was 22. I agree... people definately need to give and give some more to this cause.

Just remember... a good portion of those posting here will be diagnosed with cancer one day. Give and you may be helping yourself down the line.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss, man. I really do feel for you.

Peace.

Wow man, that's awful.

My grandfather died of cancer when I was young, my father in law has cancer, and my mother in law died in a car wrek a couple of years ago. I was too young to truly experiance the pain of the loss, but my wife knows what it's like to lose a parent and it'd gotta tough, I remember being with her while she cryed for weeks straight.

I know nothing can heal your pain but me and my wife send you our condolences.

Sorry about your loss.

Great job, nyc. It's people like you who keep this topic in the forefront of people's minds. As a sidebar, I highly encourage everyone to see Michael Moore's new movie "Sicko" that's coming out soon. Whether you like Moore or despise him (personally, I don’t like him), he addresses those with fatal illnesses who cannot get care in the best country in the world. I saw the movie (usenet) and while it was obviously one sided, it does bring a lot of issues to your mind which need to be debated by everyone. It makes you think. And thinking is always good.

Sorry for your loss.

My Mom died when I was 10 of Breast Cancer w/mets to the brain.

In a month it will be 31 years ago. Unbelievable.

Hopefully one of these days they will cure this insidious disease.

Very sorry to learn of your loss. My own mother is battling it as we speak (radiation, chemo, etc.), so I know how draining it can be on the emotions. Thanks to modern medicine, however, it's no longer an automatic death sentence.

I had a rather frightening occurrence of malignant skin cancer five years ago.

It was removed and hopefully will never return.

It is a horribly powerful experience to hear one's name mentioned in the same breath as malignant cancer.

I feel for what you've gone through...

I hope you realize you have all of us here as a support group.

Can't believe I missed this thread earlier.

Best wishes to you and your family NYC.

We can only hope that somehow someway in the future they can find a cure for cancer.

Horrible condition...

My father has lung cancer now and is doing the chemo/radiation thing.

But the fact is that many cancers can be detected early and treated but you have to get your arse to the doctor and get the tests...

Colonoscopy
Blood test
Prostate exam
Yearly checkups

God almighty take the time and invest the money in yourself.
