In today's NFL economy, the Cowboys must consider becoming bigger spenders if they want to keep up

There is more than enough evidence to show that the Cowboys front office has to be willing to spend a little bit more.

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to win the Super Bowl this season. At least that’s the sentiment of the oddsmakers, as ESPN has them ranked 19th at 50-to-1 odds this season. The perception of this football team is pretty low. We get it. They had struggles last year, they have a new coaching staff this year, and Jerry Jones is running the team, which many would consider a kiss of death.

The Cowboys have their work cut out for them, but are things really this bad? Why are they so far behind the other good teams in the league?

We discussed the great advantage the Philadelphia Eagles have given themselves by how Howie Roseman operates and how it’s a stark contrast to the Cowboys. The Eagles aggressively use void years to spend money now and push out costs into later years. Philly is on an island with how they use this:

  1. Philadelphia Eagles $452 million
  2. Cleveland Browns $248 million
  3. New Orleans Saints $164
  4. San Francisco 49ers $138
  5. Detroit Lions $94

Not bigger, smarter. Quit spending big only on CBs and WRs. We lose because of our D trenches, but yet we focus on getting more CBs.

Every loves sucking up to the winners. We have our Eagles and 49er's crowd on here. Though no one mentioned SF last year and their 6-11 record, worse than Dallas at 7-10.
No one seems to have talked SF up this year, yet.
Don't take those remarks so serious.

Who cares that the Eagles pushed money into void years. They will have to pay for it at some point. They basically bought a SB win. Which is ok, we all would love for Jerry to do this. Get us a SB soon. They fear doing it for some reason.

I think Jerry and Son, are trying to sell the fans, by not overspending or spending at all in FA to get these type of players. They are building a team for a long term run. Such as KC has done. Though KC uses FA as well.
Building through the draft is fine. But there are contracts due after 4 years and you can't keep all those players. You need to spend in FA to fill the gaps with top players, not tier 3 players.

Same old song and dance, my friend ... Aerosmith ...until proven otherwise.
This year was night and day from last year at this time. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Expect no miracles. However ...
Miracles out of Nowhere ... Kanas .... have happened before.

Don't see anyone sucking up to the winners on this site. I think you're misreading people.

They think they can get away with half measures, and that the roster is better than it is because they aren’t any good at evaluation, so they listen to rah rah type assistants hype up players.

I don’t understand why you make a move for Pickens but still haven’t bothered to address the run defense.

The answer? They think they have addressed it since they paid Osa and drafted a couple of guys late.

They rely on too much to go right, and I’m actually kind of surprised that Jerry doesn’t make more of a push to contend…..but again, he probably thinks he has.

Jerry is just so football-dumb. Much more so than most understand. Pickens was simply another pathetic desperate move to remain relevant.

Once you understand that Jerry's goal is not to win the super bowl but to remain relevant, then it all becomes easier to understand.

We passed up yet another chance this draft to build a super bowl contending DLine. Instead of affirming that we drafted good players, ask yourself why we'd ignore the DLine in a draft that was perfect to build a super bowl contender. Easy answer, w/ Jerry it's not about winning super bowls, it's about staying in playoff contention as long as possible to keep people watching and buying jerseys. If a super bowl appearance happens, so be it, but that's not the end game.

Everything Jerry did screams at simply winning a few more games. Jerry's fine w/ 8-9 wins as long as the team is in playoff contention til close to the end of the season. That's all he cares about. He absolutely cannot stand a 3-14 season, even though a couple of those might help in the long run.

Bottom line: Jerry only builds teams to contend for making the playoffs.

It wouldn't shock me to see a good portion of the NFL ownership push for more restrictions in the next CBA. Not so much due to team not wanting to get into dead cap in future years but the amount of actual dollars spent each offseason to be competitive.
With the explosion in cap ceiling per year, rising salaries and more usage of void years/restructuring I'm sure some owners know they can't be competitive.

There's no question Jerry is wealthy. Like 1% wealthy. but I do wonder how much he would actually want to spend each year. He has a lot of business ventures that I'm sure make him money, but also require $.

We know he will pay Parsons, handsomely at that, but the team could of been more aggressive in March without impacting Parsons deal. Cowboys will restructure and use void years on their core. But they are getting much more selective as the years go on.
Spending money at random or overpaying guys is not a sure success to build a winner, but Dallas really has sat on the sidelines for a decade+ on going after outsiders to try to really improve the team.

To sum up: Jerry doesn't get it, and he appointed his nepotic son over the contract thing even though Stephanie also has no clue. As long as these two tweedles are in charge it's not going to change.

Don't really know what that refers to.

This thread is referring to models of success, w/ a suggestion as to what we need to do to be successful. What we've been doing hasn't been working.

I don't think we have Eagles and 49ers crowds on here.
Apparently you have not noticed the past 5 years worth of threads and posts about them.

Sure, but I'm not getting your way of thinking. Don't you want success such as the Eagles are having right now? People are talking about those teams and how they were built and thinking maybe we should do some of the same things. How does that make them Eagles/49ers people?

Draft a QB #1 overall and win three Super Bowls.

Settle for less talented QB’s, invest no draft capital in the position for 25 years, and win jack.

Who would have thought?

Ya know what’s gonna happen when Philly finally pays the big price that Stephen claims is coming?….they are going to draft very high and probably find their next franchise QB and rebuild the team, all while shining what’s likely to be yet another trophy or two.

Meanwhile staying relevant every year so Netflix wants to make films about Jerry’s greatness is the plan in Dallas. I have zero doubt Philly laps them on a rebuild unless serious changes in philosophy are made.

Sad truth and you all know it to one degree or another.

I don't see it as sucking up to winners, it's becoming envious of how certain franchises go about their business. Who cares about down the line for the Iggles when they have won 2 in the last 7 years? The 9ers though? Well, I will agree that their lack of success rarely gets talked about, and their downward trajectory could be a thing. The Iggles are still young.......
