I'm seriously entertaining the idea of going to training camp this year. I love reading all the reports of people that go to training camp and would like to experience it myself, at least once. Since Oxnard is not that far from Seattle, it'd be worth it. They seem pretty intent on having camp in San Antonio in the future, so why not go this year? Plus it could be a special season for them.

For those of you that have been to Oxnard, maybe you could shed some light on the area and what training camp is like.

What's the best place to fly into? Burbank? LAX?

What's there to do there between practices?

Could I survive without a car for a day or two and not get too bored?

What hotels are near the practice facility?

Does anyone know the exact dates of training camp yet?

I can tell you from the Wichita Falls and San Antonio camp perspectives alone but I'd say yes it is worth it to go for sure.

You will definitely want a car imho.

Scheduling can be somewhat tentative so if preparing far in advance be ready to entertain yourself for a few hours each day at least.

My personal routine would be go for a day/night split and entertain myself for a couple of hours between practice then head home. For a working person the one day off is easy enough to accomplish and the two practices is enough to whet the appetite going forward.

I went to the Texans/Boys scrimmage oncer and it was also pretty entertaining. Texans fans are a hoot really.

Here are my Oxnard plans for 2008:

Day 1: watch HBO
Day 2-14: see Day 1.

Yah...I know, but it's not the same as being there.

You could easily fly into Burbank and rent a car and make the drive. I'm not to famailar with any other local airports in the area.

There is a motel 6 in the area, but if not, search oxnard, ca for motels. I'm sure many are listed.

The dates have not been given out yet. Personally, Each year the Cowboys came to camp.. I stayed at the Marriott with them. It's a blast running into all the players.

Between practices.. The beachs aren't to far from the practice fields.

Are they going to be at the Marriott again?

Yes... Atleast I intended to be.

I called the Marriott and they are booked, which is understandable. The Cowboys usually book the whole Marriott. But, I asked for them to start a waiting list and to place me first on the list. Which they did. Once camp information is realeased. I'll give them a call back, and confirm which days I would like to stay there.

It's costly ... I remember it was about 200$ a night. But, 3 buddies and I shared expenses.

Best to fly into Burbank -- less traffic and smaller airport. Downside is it will probably cost more to fly in and out of Burbank versus LAX.

The beaches...only 10 minutes away from the practice facility. Ventura is a nice place to visit...Santa Barbara is a great place to visit...it's 30-40 minutes away. There's a huge outlet mall 15 minutes away for those wanting to shop.

Depends on where you're staying. You can take the bus to shuttle around Oxnard/Ventura area. Golf course is right next to the practice facility.

Don't have the dates...someone here should have that info for you shortly.

I have been at least once to all of the Cowboys training camp locations except thousand Oaks.....and it is a blast!

I can tell you that anywhere in the LA vicinity without a car would be a colossal mistake

Burbank would be the closest "big" airport in the area - if you are into little planes, then Santa Barbara is a little closer.

The distance from LAX isn't much different -- maybe 15 minutes different on a good day but Burbank is much easier to deal with travel-wise and you'll be far less likely to hit massive traffic

I also believe Fox has a rent a car agency at Burbank airport and if you are mindful, they have very cheap rates from their website...As low as $11/day, www.foxrentacar.com

On the west coast, Fox is well known for cheap rates and nice cars...Stay away from Advantage Rent a Car...BIG time scam operation

Valencia isn't far away from Oxnard and there's a large Amusement Park there if you're up for it

And I'd add that flying into the Valley, Burbank is ALWAYS a better option than LAX...However, rates flying into Burbank are not always competitive with LAX (Unless you go Southwest which does fly into Burbank).

If I was you I would fly into Burbank Airport. It is not as busy and you cut off probably 1-2 hours drive to get to Oxnard. Secondly rent a car with no mileage restrictions. Everything is far away in california. When traveling to oxnard and exiting off the 101 highway into the city stay away from the left side (north) of the city. The area is called colonia. It is a major hispanic gang area and if you are in it during twilight hours or after dark you will become a crime statistic. This is an extremely dangerous area to be in and I would not even go there in the daytime. I would also recommend that you stay in the most expensive hotel you can afford. Your security and the rental cars security will corelate into how expensive the place you are staying at. There are many hotels and motels in the area. Ventura is a great place to visit. If you do go there, visit Leo Carrillo beach. It is where many television and movie shows have been shot including the famous beach scene in From here to Eternity. If you swim in the ocean, before getting in look around the area and search for wildlife. If you see seals, chances are you are okay, but if they are suddenly gone then you will know that a shark is in the area. The great whites here get absolutely huge in this part of the pacific. The golf is great and the weather is wonderful, it gets cold at night so bring a blazer or a light jacket and always take traveler checks. Harder to steal, and they can be replaced. I would use a 70% traveler check to 30% cash ratio.

Two years ago I went to camp in Oxnard, stayed at the Vagabond Inn in Ventura... averaged out to about $100 a night... the room was clean but dated... the neighborhood was safe, the pool was nice... all in all I found that I spent very little time in the hotel so it worked out going with a cheaper hotel...

I got a package deal through Orbitz and the rental car was dirt cheap at around $25 per day...

Definitely recommend getting a car and cruising around the area... on the way back to LAX airport I took the scenic ocean route and drove through Malibu... that was fun... downtown Oxnard was a nice place to hang out...

Would definitely do camp again... only thing that sucked was the last two days most of the practices were held on the field away from the fans...I'm sure Parcells had a lot to do with that...

If it is not that much more to fly into Burbank then go that route. Male sure to take a trip up north to Santa Barbara for dinner and stuff like that.

Come on, now...the Great Whites aren't that huge here. Can't measure more than 15-18 feet in the surrounding area. :D Actually, where we surf, Point Mugu, is a haven for Great Whites...never encountered any though...lots of seals and dolphins...maybe see a triangular fin at a distance from time to time, but no nibbles.
