Injuries... What Do We Know?

Lee probably gametime decision with dislocated wrist, McBriar probably gameday decision, Jenkins maybe out 3-4 weeks.

Jenks up to 4 but we'll see. He's young and might heal quicker. If he comes back too soon, it can linger. Austin missed a lot more than a week or two. I have faith in Scandy and Walker in the mean time. Ball has been OK too.

I am a little worried about McBriar, there is nerve damage involved so this could linger or worse.

Having had a dislocated wrist while being a drummer in a metal band, I'd think Lee would only miss one game, two max but might be in a cast to avoid further injury in games for a while.

That means fewer picks and less tackles. I played with one arm for a few weeks other than an occasional awesome fill while it healed. Even without a cast, it will impact his ability to wrap up, strip the ball and even catch well.

We're all different and Lee has nowhere near the muscle mass I had as a anorexic rock drummer, so it may take more time for him. ;)
 
There truly is nothing worse than getting blown out and having injuries.

That was an issue that came up at the end of the Pats game with back spasms. Based on the Rams and Eagles games it looks like he is doing okay.
 
(This post assumes he has a common peroneal nerve injury which is probably the most common mono-neuropathy in the lower extremity. It usually arises from an injury to the nerve close to the head of fibula just to the outside of your knee joint. It is most commonly caused by acute or chronic pressure or stretching of the nerve).

About McBriar, most people who have a common peroneal nerve injury (just my doc guess from watching him on the field on Sunday) do not recovery very quickly depending on its severity. He seemed to have a complete footdrop which would argue for a recovery period of several weeks. Hopefully the extent of his injury and prognosis for the next few weeks are clarified soon. There is a pretty good test called NCS/EMG (nerve conduction study/electromyography) that can give a good guideline about the extent of his nerve injury and localize the injury.

My guess is McBriar will soon be put on the IR as it will be awhile before he is healthy to play again. We will need to audition for a replacement punter for the rest of the year. We should have a good idea in the offseason whether he is going to recover. He could be a candidate for a nerve graft or a nerve transfer procedure depending on the localization and extent of the nerve injury if it does not recover with time.

BTW, I had this same exact nerve injury but it took me about 3 months before I was able to run again. However, my nerve injury was a relatively minor one and I have seen patients with this condition who never recovered.

Happened to groom at a wedding I attended. Drunken touch football - dislocated hip + knee...... permanent dropped foot.

Mosley, who apparently knows McBriar very well, said yesterday that Mat was in fact responding to the treatment and was showing some improvement.

So that's great news, for his life if not for his immediate return to punting.

Early response suggests the nature of the nerve injury is demyelination (insulation of nerve affected) and not axonal degeneration (nerve wiring is internally degenerated) which means there is a much better prognosis for recovery.

Haha Ware played with a strained neck a couple years ago against New Orleans I'm pretty sure he'll be fine. Jenkins is out a month, but with the way Scandrick has played this season we should be ok. I really hope Lee doesn't have season ending surgery because Brooking and James are simply too old and slow.
