Both Starting Corners Suffer Injury Setbacks
Posted by nickeatman at 8/8/2009 2:44 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

While nothing appears to be too serious, the Cowboys did have a setback at the cornerback position on Saturday, with not one, but both starters suffering injuries.
Left cornerback Terence Newman was limited in practice with a slight groin strain. MRI results were negative and showed no tears, but the Cowboys decided to hold him out for precautionary reasons and will monitor him. Wade Phillips said just now in his press conference the injury is completely unrelated to last year’s groin injury that led to a abdominal strain and surgery.
During the morning practice, the biggest scare of camp so far occurred when right cornerback Mike Jenkins had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury. An MRI showed just a sprain on the lower part of his right ankle. Initially, the Cowboys feared the treacherous high-ankle sprain, but that’s not the case.
Phillips described Jenkins’ injury as “day-to-day.” The second-year cornerback dropped to the ground after making a cut during the no-pads practice. Orlando Scandrick and Alan Ball finished practice with the first-team defense.

Phillips did not rule out either player from playing in the Aug. 13 preseason opener in Oakland.

As for Newman, he’s been snake-bitten by injuries each of the last two training camps. In 2007, he suffered a foot injury that caused him to miss all of the preseason games and the first two regular-season games, too.

Newman is injury prone. It is official.

I dont want him playing unless it's the regular season. Sit him untill he's fully healthy the guy is ridiculous.

I'd like for Newman to play in the regular season... but it's just too big of an injury risk. I guess we'll have to save him for the post season games. ;)

Either that or just very unlucky.

Newman has one of those Doug Donley bodies. Wrapped extremely tight and seems prone to muscle pulls/strains.

I wince at any sentence containing the words 'Newman' and 'groin'. T-New is edging towards Anthony Henry 'persistently injured' territory.

Newman has been injured for as long as i can remember. Even back when we drafted him...i remember he had a shoulder injury that resulted in one shoulder being noticably smaller than other shoulder (which can be sign of neurological involvement). Now we find out from his interview that one side of his lower body was weaker than other side and thus all the injuries past few years. At what point has this guy been healthy? I have zero doubt that Scandrick and Jenkins are our starters for majority of the regular season games...I wouldnt mind being young at CB position for years to come.

This defense will never live up to its billing.2006 was the last injury free season for the defense and that was when most of the key people were young or just not that talented.

I may be old school on this injury but he has had almost a year to address this groin and it seems to be even more sensitive after of a year of intense training with our workout guru, I may be more inclined this year to question the trainer and apologize for last year being so skeptical about the problems with injuries and associating them as individual problems. Here is hoping Felix has seen the last of his hammy issues.

Does anyone know, once a troubled groin always a source of problems? Never had the dreaded injury myself. Looking forward to the zoners opinions on this ugly situation.
