Both Starting Corners Suffer Injury Setbacks

While nothing appears to be too serious, the Cowboys did have a setback at the cornerback position on Saturday, with not one, but both starters suffering injuries.
Left cornerback Terence Newman was limited in practice with a slight groin strain. MRI results were negative and showed no tears, but the Cowboys decided to hold him out for precautionary reasons and will monitor him. Wade Phillips said just now in his press conference the injury is completely unrelated to last year’s groin injury that led to a abdominal strain and surgery.
During the morning practice, the biggest scare of camp so far occurred when right cornerback Mike Jenkins had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury. An MRI showed just a sprain on the lower part of his right ankle. Initially, the Cowboys feared the treacherous high-ankle sprain, but that’s not the case.
Phillips described Jenkins’ injury as “day-to-day.” The second-year cornerback dropped to the ground after making a cut during the no-pads practice. Orlando Scandrick and Alan Ball finished practice with the first-team defense.

Phillips did not rule out either player from playing in the Aug. 13 preseason opener in Oakland.
As for Newman, he’s been snake-bitten by injuries each of the last two training camps. In 2007, he suffered a foot injury that caused him to miss all of the preseason games and the first two regular-season games, too.
