Notes for Thursday Insider Report

On special teams, especially in punt returns, Newman, Felix, Jenkins and Willie Reid were seen returning punts cleanly, but no hitting when coverage teams ran downfield. So, you cant judge that aspect of punt returns yet.

Are the Cowboys experimenting with a jumbo package ala The Refrigerator formerly with the Bears. Maybe, because Marcus Spears was seen lining up wide on offensive side, ran deep about 30 yards and caught the ball,. Remember, Parcells tried to use Spears as a big blocking TE on some goal line situations, and Spears was a noted TE coming out of high school.

Cowboys Russell Maryland, Irvin, Spurs Elliot were seen at practice.

Jon Kitna is drawing oohs and ahhs for his quick knowledge of the game to adapt to cowboys offense, while being precise on deep throws, etc. His timing is just alittle off and has to get alittle more settled in to the pass rush, but otherwise doing great. He can be a great influence on Romo.

Back to Marcus Spears, he was knocked down again by a rb, something that shouldn’t happen with a 300 pd plus defensive line against a smaller rb. Alonzo Coleman, did just that, getting underneath Spears, he lifted him off the ground, then put spears on the ground. Hmm, maybe some of those martial arts techniques from randy white wasn’t paying off for spears.

Another player that I am extremely high on that was drafted by the Cowboys is Jason Williams, granted he still has a lot too learn from going from outside linebacker to inside linebacker, the Cowboys are giving Jason W. a lot of time on the field to learn.

Again, Butler stood out in practice, he is all over the field, as some of you have read in other posts. Butler has dominated TE’s mostly, and covered Rbs in coverage, while also covering roy Williams on a shadow pass play, pretty impressive for the rookie.

Romo looked a lot sharper today, while faking a handoff expertly, Romo pumped on a fake pass, before tossing a ball over Monster OLB/DE Ware and over the outside shoulder of Sam Hurd WR, with Hurd leaning over the sideline to catch the pass.
