First, with the cap increase and, what I believe, a re-negotiation of Ware's contract we'll have ample funds to acquire a lineman or two in FA to get some proven rotation players along the DL. The numbers take too long to post but it's possible we can get 10+ mill under. I think some cap will also be used to extend Dez. Costa and Durant are outright released.

The goal of the draft is to draft BPA, with tie going to defense, solidify the lines, improve the front 7 on defense, and most importantly, apply some pressure.

To the mock;

1. Aaron Donald DT
If he gets past the bears, I think he's ours. With the Bears moving to more of a "hybrid" scheme, I think they'll go in a different direction. To our benefit, there's only one real suitor between us and the mid 20's for Donald. I think a QB or a WR possibly falls, and we trade down picking up an additional third and landing what could be the steal of the draft.

2. Marcus Smith DE

3(a). Brandon Thomas OG

3(b). Jordan Tripp LB
Tested very well at the Combine. "RKG". Has size/speed for future WLB. I don't think Carter will be resigned unless he really impresses. Tripp allows Carter to move to MLB in case of a Lee injury this season.

At this point I believe they'll be looking at any player who can possibly contribute, adding another weapon on offense would be helpful.

4. Jared Abbrederis WR or Caraun Reid DT
While the Beaz is a crowd favorite, Jared has the ideal size that Dallas likes in their receivers. He's also been described as a terrific route runner and would make an excellent slot receiver. I also wouldn't be surprised if they took Reid as a 1-tech, although he may go in the third. I'm sure Jason knows all about him.

5. Tyler Gaffney RB
In this league with the beating RB's take you need at least a semi-decent backup that can carry a load in case of an emergency. We drafted Randle last year but I just don't really see any redeeming qualities to him. Gaffney has a reputation of an inside runner who can carry the load, and he ran surprisingly well at the Combine. Even if we lose Murray next offseason and make RB a priority, Gaffney could be a capable #2 for his rookie contract, especially behind what could be a very good OL.

At this point, I improve the team in any way necessary. Admittedly, I don't really know much about any of these guys so bear that in mind.

7. L'Damian Washington WR
Big, tall, fast, not a great or polished WR which is why he falls.

7. Kirby Van Der Kamp P
SPECIAL TEAMS, SPECIAL TEAMS. It's the 7th round and if I'm looking to improve my football team, I take a flyer on the best punter in the draft. I read a stat on him that he had 17 50+ yard punts, and 27 punts downed inside the 20 this season. Special teams can win games, just take him.

7. JC Copeland FB
Admittedly, this is for my own amusement. I would love to see us break out some power-running football whenever we needed to just demoralize another team's front seven. A combination of Smith, Thomas/Leary, Frederick with this bowling ball leading the way sounds like a nightmare.

I'm not sure exactly how many 7th rounders we'll have but if we have any more I'm positive at least one will be another DL, a 1-technique type.

Now, hopefully I can get some sleep.

Also it'd be a strange draft without a DB taken, but the contracts of Carr, Scandrick, and Claiborne tells me that unless it's absolutely BPA we won't be drafting one.

I have no idea what the coaching staff is doing about safety but there's really not a whole lot to be enamored with in this draft outside of the first rounders, and I'd rather have Donald.

I'd love to take Tillman on a 1-year deal and move him to safety. Marinelli's scheme is second nature to him and he loves to play for Rob. I think he'd be an upgrade if he'd take the deal, but I don't think we'd offer one. I have a feeling it's the Wilcox/Church train next season, for better or worse.
