Ryan should of had 3 or 4 IG penalties last night. In the pocket throwing the ball way out of bounds to avoid pressure, just like Romo did in the Giants playoff lost. What the blank?
I thought, ONLY if you were out of the pocket and threw it past the line of scrimmage, if not it was IG!.

Make of it what you will....

Intentional Grounding of Forward Pass

Intentional grounding of a forward pass is a foul: loss of down and 10 yards from previous spot if passer is in the field of play or loss of down at the spot of the foul if it occurs more than 10 yards behind the line or safety if passer is in his own end zone when ball is released.

Intentional grounding will be called when a passer, facing an imminent loss of yardage due to pressure from the defense, throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion.

Intentional grounding will not be called when a passer, while out of the pocket and facing an imminent loss of yardage, throws a pass that lands at or beyond the line of scrimmage, even if no offensive player(s) have a realistic chance to catch the ball (including if the ball lands out of bounds over the sideline or end line).

I thought the first one he threw should have been IG. He was still in the pocket and there were two of our guys in his face and it looked like nobody was in the vicinity of the throw.

The others he had gotten outside of the tackles so it was okay to throw it away as long as it was to the line of scrimmage.

I think there has to a receiver within five yards of the ball. If there is nobody in the area that the ball was thrown to and the qb is going to be taken down for a loss while he is still in the pocket then it should be IG. But if he is not obviously going to be taken to the ground then its not a penalty. You see that all the time. A reciever and a qb are not on the same page and it looks like the qb is just throwing the ball into open space. Then if the announcer was a qb they blame the receiver for running the wrong route. Or if the announcer is a receiver then they usually find a way to blame the qb. Thats always kind of funny to hear.

Don't expect to see this rule enforced consistently anytime soon. I swear the NFL is getting frustrating to watch at times. Every time the QB goes down, you have to wait in anxiety to see if thee will be a 15 yard flag. Every time there is a pass defended tightly you have to wait in anxiety to see if there will be a PI flag. Anytime there is an incomplete pass with close defense the receiver cries for a flag. Its getting unwatchable at times. :(

I don't remember exactly how the plays went down, but if the quarterback leaves the pocket then comes back in, then he can still throw it away. I don't know if that applies to those situations though.

If the five yard rule was true, then McNabb would be called for IG on every other play;)

If you throw the ball away in the pocket and there is no reciever near the ball and your last name is Romo it is a penalty. Pretty simple really.

Romo has a special intentional grounding rule that applies only to him, then there's the rule for the rest of the league, which is hardly enforced.

That's the problem with being a quarterback who rarely throws the ball away under pressure.

here is the rule, grounding is something that is not to be called on Roethlisberger, either Manning or Brady.

I agree that at least one of them was a clear IG that wasn't called.

But let me comment on the Romo IG in the Giants game. That was NOT intentional grounding because he was not in imminent danger of being sacked. He decided to throw the ball away but he wasn't under pressure at the time. That was a horrible call.
