This is essentially what McCarthy is trying to do, have a short, quick passing game that causes those safeties to cheat up and opens up the deeper stuff. At the start of the season, we weren't transitioning well from the short game to the long one. The last few games, we've done a much better job of that. I think a lot of it was the learning curve in implementing more West Coast principles. I think our next countermove will be more passes to the backs when defenses stay back to keep from being beaten deep. We can't get the running game going, but a quick checkdown to Pollard can be just as effective.
this type of defense greatly depends on the front 4 being able to generate pass rush, that's why SF is effective, because their front 4. its designed to drop 7 into coverage and take away passing zones and passing lanes.
its designed to take away the big play, not that the big play can't be had (but its harder).

if the front 4 can't get to the QB, then it all falls apart. its also suspect to WRs who can get to the outside forcing the safeties to have to get to the sideline and cover a longer distance, which leaves the middle open, and that's why teams with athletic TEs can attack the seam, specially if you don't have LBs that can keep up with the TEs. it does force the teams to have to play short ball, but that's where your Slot WRs come in to play and the defense is somewhat suspect to crossing routes if you run some seam routes that open up the middle. you should be able to run against this type of defense, but then again, it depends on the front 4, since the MLB is expected to drop into coverage and often plays further back from LOS. with this type of defense, if the offense is patient, they can win TOP, as they would have to get a lot of first downs to move down the field.

in essence West coast principles can somewhat neutralize it, but you also have to have deep routes to allow the west coach crossing routes to work. I agree, that I think MM is now getting to the point of implementing his offense. he is attacking down field and seeing some success. he is attacking the seam with CD and TEs and he is seeing some success and that's how he is pressuring the defense. not sure why we can't get the running game working and I think that has to do more with blocking scheme than anything else.

Overshown?
Good speed and will hit...not the dominant piece in the center in the NFL. Outside projected. Multi use piece and good in pass defense. Want to see him up to speed. That may have slowed, but he is welcome back by this linebacker.

I think we need to work the running game from the outside in. Use more counters and tosses to stress the outside and get teams to loosen up the middle before punching it up the gut.

The league always is full circle until the next team try’s something new and will beat that defense. Man I love football
It is not new thing, TB the GOAT made his career by dinking and dunking , killing the teams by underneath routes until he find a laser boom ball. It takes discipline and players who are talented and patient.

True. But teams have to be patient, and can’t have penalties, or it’s a fiasco.

And people tried to argue that teams weren't playing two high safeties against the Cowboys most of the time. Obviously not every down, but most downs, they were keeping both safeties back to keep the big play in check.

To me, that's why the lack of a running game has been so disappointing. Teams are playing back AND stopping the run against us.
