The celebrity quarterback

I asked Troy Aikman at a Fox news conference if he was surprised most of the talk surrounding Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo continues to be his weekend getaway to Mexico than the record-setting season he had.
"No, I'm not surprised," Aikman said. "Now, do I think it impacted his performance? No way. No one does, but I always believed you wanted to go out and not give any good reason to think your performance had anything to do with anything other than just not going out and playing well, and when he went to Cabo, that opened himself up to scrutiny. In light of the criticism that came after the Philadelphia game, I think unfairly, that was a good indicator as far as whatever public interest there was in that relationship.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is subject to feeling the heat on and off the field.

"There was a big target on his back going into that game. If they win and he played great, then all that does is add to the legend. If you don't, then you're at where we are now. … We all want to live our life and not worry about what the perception is. But perception is perception. I think that there are times you do have to make decisions based on perceptions or else you have to be able to accept whatever criticism comes."

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's reaction: "Tony is one of the most competitive guys I know. He loves football and he loves the game. His teammates know that. Some of that is going to come on with being the Cowboys' quarterback. But it is disappointing to see all this that he takes. I know that eventually it sinks down with him and bothers him. The perception is wrong because Tony is definitely a hard worker and a great quarterback."

Looking back at December play

Clearly it matters how you are playing at the end of the year. The Cowboys learned a team can't turn it on once the playoffs start.

"When we were going into the playoffs, we weren't playing our best football," Witten said. "We struggled at Washington and really the whole month there. As you see now with the Giants, momentum going into it is what it is about. I just think the penalties and the way we played really hurt us. We were moving the ball well on them and had the time of possession, but there were a lot of mental lapses there that really cost us and we weren't able to stop them down the stretch."

Losing Pasqualoni

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware developed a tight relationship with Paul Pasqualoni in their two years together as player/assistant coach, so Ware was not happy to see Pasqualoni leave for the Dolphins' defensive coordinator gig.

"He was a great leader on defense in general," Ware said. "Coaching-wise, he critiques us so much on every little thing we did that I hope the next coach is the same way. Everybody has their own style, but when you have a guy on you and pushing you and making you work harder than he's coaching, that makes players better."

Losing Bowles, gaining Campo

Cornerback Terence Newman had similar feelings about Todd Bowles' departure to Miami, too, but he has talked to a few players that worked under Dave Campo, the Cowboys' new secondary coach.

"I don't know much about him, but they say he's a laid-back guy and I heard he's pretty funny," Newman said. "Everything always works out when you get a coach that lets you play the game and doesn't get too hands on when he doesn't need to. He's one of those guys that lets you play."

Keep an eye on the free agents

The Pro Bowl almost turns into a recruiting trip for free agents. Players try to make sales pitches for their teams to prospective free agents. Pro Bowlers Ken Hamlin, Flozell Adams and Marion Barber (restricted) will possibly hit the market in some form in March. Newman is attempting to keep his teammates in Dallas.

"When we first got to the hotel, that's all you hear, 'Hey, man, are you up? We need you to come here,' " Newman said. "I'm like, 'Hey, people, ask me.' They're talking to Barber, talking to Ken. I was joking around with a Packers coach who was talking to Ken, and I don't know what they were talking about, but I was like, 'Hey, I'm telling you right now he's coming back to Dallas.' It's all in fun and all in respect."

I wish Newman and Ware wouldn't miss the other guys, but with their type of talent I don't think we will see much of a difference on the field.

I'm more excited to see what Campo can get out of Roy.

with Newman's report back on Campo:

"I don't know much about him, but they say he's a laid-back guy and I heard he's pretty funny," Newman said. "Everything always works out when you get a coach that lets you play the game and doesn't get too hands on when he doesn't need to. He's one of those guys that lets you play."

So... lets add this up, you have Stewart who is going into his second year as a DC, a laid back coach in Campo, and Wade Phillips who is just as easy going.

I just hope this won't hurt their focus and discipline. Just like Ware says about Coach Pasq, "He was a great leader on defense in general," Ware said. "Coaching-wise, he critiques us so much on every little thing we did that I hope the next coach is the same way. Everybody has their own style, but when you have a guy on you and pushing you and making you work harder than he's coaching, that makes players better."

Will Campo and Wade do this with their laid-back style to get the most out of every player? Yes, Wade was successful in his first year... so I just hope that continues.
