In the history of this franchise the Cowboys have selected a QB in the draft with 1st rd pick only twice. Craig Morton selected 5th overall and Troy Aikman 1st overall. Really amazing when you think Cleveland alone 6 over the same time span.

Qb is such an interesting position in terms of drafting. There are probably more busts at qb than any other position bc it gets overdrafted so badly.

The best qb of all time was a 6th round pick, our current qb was a 4th, and his predecessor was undrafted.

Very interesting indeed

They got lucky with Roger, as a later round pick, because they knew they had to wait 4 years for him to play. Or he would have been a 1st round pick, buy some team, if not Dallas, if not for his commitment to the Navy.

No doubt, I see teams jump up and take QB with a 1st rd pick when those guys are not top players. Bradon Weeden? Johnny Maziel and really a whole host of other QB who really had no business being taken in the 1st rd. In my view Trey Lance had no business being taken in the 1st rd.

True, Roger was a 10th rd pick and in those days you had AFL drafting player and was drafted by Kansas City in the 16th rd.

How many Heisman Trophy winners at QB have failed? That is almost the kiss of death for a college QB to win that award.

In supplemental draft

It still costs a first round pick (the following year), though. It turned out to be the #1 overall pick in 1990, but there was (as we now know) a bigger draft plan.

Yes the supplemental draft.
yes but it still counts. If we had kept our 1st round pick, we could have drafted Junior Seau.

My big question is who gets drafteted 1 overall if Aikman and Walsh were both available at that time. Jimmy recruited Troy but he won a national championship with Walsh.

No one got a pick from Dallas and Dallas still had a 1st rd pick and took Emmitt

20 straight winning seasons doesn't provide a franchise any opportunties to draft a QB in the top 10 overall (unless it trades up), along with having very few really bad losing seasons since 1965 -
1988__ 3-13
1989__ 1-15
2012__ 4-12

Actually, the Cowboys drafted a third QB in the first round...
Steve Walsh - selected 1st overall in the 1989 NFL Supplemental Draft.

The key is drafting a guy with a strong accurate arm and most importantly putting them in the right system and position to excel. See Linehan/Prescott
