Interesting Factoid About Where This Year's Playoff QB's Were Drafted

A lot of people including me have commented that the NFC seems down this year. I personally think a lot of it is mediocre QB play. Interesting to see therefore where this year's playoff QB's were drafted. In the AFC every single one was drafted in the first round, most very high. In the NFC only one was drafted in the first round. This could be one of those extremely rare years where a QB drafted outside the first few rounds (with the exception of the GOAT Brady of course) wins the SB. Cousins and Dak could battle to be the first 4th rounder to win one this century. Or they could both go up in flames.

Mahomes...1st round
Allen...1st round
Burrow...1st round
Herbert...1st round
Lawrence...1st round
Tagovailoa...1st round
Jackson...1st round
D Jones...1st round
Hurts...2nd round

That must some kind of record for 1st rounders.

We know Brady is an all-time enigma, so toss him.

The article was posted here a couple weeks ago.
How could they post it a couple weeks ago when they didn't know who the playoff teams were
Mahomes...1st round
Allen...1st round
Burrow...1st round
Herbert...1st round
Lawrence...1st round
Tagovailoa...1st round
Jackson...1st round
D Jones...1st round
Hurts...2nd round

It's crazy in the AFC this year

It's certainly a record high for 1st-round playoff QBs in one conference (all 7 in the AFC).
But it's actually a record LOW number of 1st-round QBs (at least in the 14-team playoff era).

Last year, out of the 14 playoff QBs:
9 1st-rounders
3 2nd-rounders
Dak
Brady

In 2020, there were 11 1st-round QBs in the playoffs.

Before 2020, there were only 12 playoff teams. And yet, every year from 2017 to 2019, there were 8 1st-round QBs. I'm not looking back further.

The reason is simply that the great majority of starting QBs were 1st-round picks. At the beginning of this season, 23 of the 32 teams had 1st-rounders as their intended starting QBs (I'm counting Watson). At least four teams (Rams, Panthers, Jets, Steelers) replaced those 1st-rounders with other 1st-rounders. QBs get drafted high.

I see what you did there. Saying it was a record but only going back a few of years.
Or saying it's a record low for 14 team when thats so recent.
Nice

Good point though. There were a lot of 1st rounders every year, it appears.

I don't know what to tell you. We only have 3 years of 14-team playoffs. You could go by percentage of 1st-rounders among starting playoff QBs and it's still the low going back to at least 2017.

You said it "must be some kind of record," but it's really on the low end of normal; that's the point I was making.

Yeah....I had no idea if was a record or not.
It wasn't. Even one less than just last year
And as you noted, there have been at least 4-5 seasons more recently. We don't know about overall, but it looks like there are more 1st rounders than I thought.

After this year I think most outside Cowboy nation would take Goff. He's in a great situation too with the culture that coach is building. They are such an easy team to root for now.

You do know that most QB starting in the NFL were 1st rd picks even those who are not in post season? So not a shock to see a lot of QB who were 1st rd picks in post season.

Even more telling is if you go back 20 years and look at the QBs in the SB. Leaving Brady out, I think there are only a handful.
Its even more definite when you look at winning QBs. Brady and Brees I think are the only ones that were not first rd picks.

And QBs are so valuable, that they are mostly overdrafted, so mostly 1sts. Always been that way, though it's gotten even moreso lately due to the changes to a passing league.

Yeah, that's the real reason. The risk-reward is completely different for QBs than other players. The reward of hitting on a starting QB is so great that you're willing to use high draft picks on guys with a much lower probability of success than you would accept at other positions.

I love me some Dak but he is what he is. hes better than anyone on that list not because he overacheived. He plays like a 4th rounder. the others failed to live up to their billing and were over drafted. Goff however seems to be living up to his billing a bit more these days

I agree, I think many times teams will reach for a QB high in the draft over more talented position players. Trubisky 2nd pick in the draft in 2017? lol
