I've always liked learning about Treasure Hoards
I was listening to Ten Caesars: Roman Emperors from Augustus to Constantine and learned about The Decebalus Treasure.
It seems that the kingdom of Dacia was about to be invaded & looted, again, by Rome.
The Dacian dammed the river Strei, buried all their treasure deep under the riverbed and let the river flow, hopefully, hiding their treasure.
It didn't work
The Roman Army found 165 tons of gold and 300 tons of silver.

An effective government program!
