Hit pieces on the Cowboys by the media are nothing new and has nothing to do with Vegas ties or any other conspiracy theory.
The Dallas sports media has long been filled with people that have an over-inflated sense of self worth that have long mastered the art of grabbing attention with the likes of Skip Bayless, Dale Hansen, Randy Galloway, etc. being attention ho's that understood a long time ago that style will get your further than substance in the Dallas media.
A prime example of this was the SMU football scandal where it was a 'who's who' of Dallas area reporters competing to make headlines with the story breaking. Meanwhile, none of them dared to investigate the cheating going on at Texas or Texas A&M at the time because they would have been unable to find a job in the state. This sent a very clear message...hit pieces work...you just gotta make sure you're doing it on somebody that can't (or won't) fight back.
Obviously, these hacks continue today except for Galloway is thankfully retired. Hansen continues it with his ridiculous stances on the National Anthem and in particular, his anger towards the NFL with the Michael Sam issue. And Bayless continues it with Undisputed.
Essentially, all of those old generation Dallas reporters that went after SMU moved onto either ESPN or Fox Sports. And on the way, they taught a generation of younger reporters their old tricks.
It's the worst kept secret in the Dallas media...Jerry Jones always gives more time to his detractors than he does to his supporters. And when in doubt...write something negative about the Cowboys.
Ed Werder took it further with ridiculous reports that had a Mendoza-line level of accuracy to them. But, ESPN didn't care because it made for a good headline about the most controversial NFL team. In fact, despite his horrendous accuracy and highly questionable reporting, they still make sure to describe Werder as 'reputable' and 'award winning' before his name even though he was canned months ago. So kids...you too can be lousy at your job with questionable integrity and lacking professionalism and you'll win awards!
That's the thing about the Cowboys that separates them from the rest of the team...the local media has almost no interest in ever sticking up for the organization when even the silliest of reports comes out.
When Schefter first arrived to ESPN, he claimed that he had sources that stated that there was a 'schism' in the Vikings locker room over...get this...alleged Viking players wanting Tavaris Jackson to be the starting QB instead of Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
However, any controversy was immediately shot down as every local Vikings reporter bristled at the validity of Schefter's report and without saying it...intimated that Schefter made the report up.
With the Dallas writers, they would collectively allow Schefter to pull his shenanigans and let them go unchallenged. Hell, they would probably make up 'sources' that somehow agreed with whatever preposterous of a notion Schefter could come up with.
