Interesting Preseason Stat.

Just glancing through NFL.com looking at the sacks given up by the rest of the NFC East as was mentioned in another thread. Got bored, looked up the rest of the teams.

Dallas led the NFL in fewest sacks allowed. Minnesota and Arizona both were second with four allowed.

It probably doesn't mean much at all, but looking at our preseason QB ratings, I'm kind of tickled by it.

That's an interesting stat..I think Romo's quick reads and decisions are really cutting down the sacks. Although on that pick he threw he just needs to take the sack in that sitation.

Or could it be that the backups we have playing on the oline aren't quite as bad as everyone is making them out to be?

Romo only played in maybe a full games worth of snaps. Or do you think that Kitna, McGee and Carpenter too make quick reads and decisions in the other 3 games worth of snaps?

Now I'm not disagreeing with you on Romo. I think that's one of his strengths, quick release and buying time. If he can cut down on the key turnovers, turning the ball over when we are in scoring position or turning the ball over when we have the lead, then we will be in good shape.

I still don't mind him taking chances when the situation calls for it. If we're down and need to make a play, then let it rip. But if we're at the 35 and are almost in field goal range, he needs to take the short gain and the three points.

Or it could be the defense can't get back there because of the deadball penalties committed by the OL.

He couldn't not throw that pick and take a sack - 49ers just won the play. An excellent blitz call and the LB timed it just right.

:banghead: come on people nobody's perfect!

The stat that alarms you should be 39 and 4... 39 penalties in four games, lead preseason......I hope that's not a sign of the season ahead

But as wade put it, we won the NFC east in preseason with a 2-2 record...isn't that comforting!!!

Don't you know the Cowboy's oline, both starters and reserves suck?

Worst in the NFL according to many.

You'll have that with 3rd and 4th string cats playing. Don't get me wrong, our starters have to do a better job also but most of those 39 came with the backups..

Every team played their backups just as much as Dallas did.

I wouldn't be all that concerned except for the fact that this has been going on for years. And it's always the same thing. Dumb penalties.

False starts
Unecessary roughness
Unsportsmanlike

I can deal with holds and the like...but bonehead penalties are absolutely unacceptable. I don't care if you are a Pro-Bowler or on the practice squad, those types of things should never happen.

I can live with the penalties, as long as we are keeping Romo clean, protecting the ball on offense and special teams, forcing turnovers on defense, and converting a very high percentage of red zone opportunities into TDs.

If our only bane is penalties, we should still be highly successful.

I mean, my Spurs suck at FTs, yet they were still able to win 3 Championships in 5 years.....and they had a lot of FT attempts at that time.

During the regular season, Romo's feet will be an asset. A good like is a good thing to have, but having an evasive QB such as Romo is equally valuable.

Not sure what this has to do with our backups causing penalties. I guess our backups made more penalties then the other teams backups. So what!! They're backups who probably won't even see the field and never see the field as a backup unit..

One of the things might be to hold the players committing said penalties accountable for their actions. Fine them for making boneheaded penalties. If they know it's going to come out of their wallets, maybe they'll think twice about doing it.

Fining an offensive lineman for committing a penalty isn't going to do much good. They generally commit them because they're getting beat (holding) or are scared they're about to get beat (false start).

Don't know if thats possible under the CBA.

There is a fine line between a penalty and a good play in some cases. Take holding and pass interference. Holding could be called on almost every play. Just getting your hands too far out or grabbing just a bit too much jersey can be the difference. They key is to know the situation. If you're blocking away from the play, then don't risk it. If you already have your man blocked out of the play, then don't risk it. Like the holding penalty McQuistan had on one play. He had his guy blocked, he wasn't going to make the play, yet he grabbed him and threw him to the ground. That comes from experience.

Or they are doing it to protect the QB. Would you rather have Flo take his man down when he gets beat or let him go free to Romo?

It seemed like you were saying that we got a lot of penalties because backups were in.

My point was that all teams played their backups and didn't have nearly the same amount of penalties.
