From Mat Mosley:
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfceast/0-3-51/Romo--Cowboys-play--best-game--against-the-Browns.html

“I think a lot of it depends on the coverage they run,” he said. “They rushed three guys a lot. Sometimes it’s tough because you work on getting yourself into a rhythm. The benefit for them to rush three guys is that they have more guys in coverage. The negative side is that they might get a quarterback that can go through more reads.”

Looks like Romo thinks that the Brown’s game plan was to rush 3-4, drop 7-8, and force Romo to go through multiple reads. They were evidently of the opinion that Romo wouldn’t have the patience/ability/intelligence to stand in the pocket and make 3,4,5 reads before he threw. And then they’d wait for the INTs. Not a bad plan with their beat-up secondary, since it worked when the Bills used a basically identical strategy last year and Romo threw 5 picks.

Does show you how much he's grown though. He never rushed a throw (except for that pick where he was about to get creamed).

Romo was Aikman-like going thru his reads yesterday. Will be interesting seeing what Philly throws at us. I agree he's grown up...alot.

I saw Romeo and BB - do this a lot in past, they like to send just 2 to 3 pass rushers and drop back 8 into coverage and entice QB to throw into coverage.

Red Ball beat him - we were running intermediate crossing patterns all day that force db's to pass off or chase man to man and then send TO or Witten verticle and make safeties have to make a decision on what to do.

Not to mention it opens up huge holes - that our RB's exploited.

I'm proud of Romo. That drive where his chin was bleeding, but he led the team to a touchdown was good stuff right there.

Generally, I hate 3 man rushes. Especially in the NfL. Most NFL QB's given enough time will find the receiver. Romo is not your average NFL QB.

No he also lucked out earlier in red zone - he threw a bullet straight into 4 Browns that was dropped. But yes, Red Ball had a great gameplan to attack that strategy.

Yup, letting Romo eat a snack every time he dropped back was pure genius.:laugh1:

I liked that his pass right after the play he got injured was a long bullet to Witten. He doesn't let anything rattle him.

The Bills had noticed that Romo was ignoring the flats and the short stuff in the first four games, and that most of his completions were intermediate-to-long throws. Romo adjusted during the game, but barely adjusted in time to pull out the win.

I don't know what Romeo was doing. They missed a golden opportunity to take advantage of Procter by overloading one side and blitzing in the first half when they still had a chance.

Philly will do what they always do. Blitz you all day long. But that's why Philly's run D had problems sometimes. I expect a big day from both Marion and Felix.

Last year teams tried to contain Romo in the pocket, then when that didn't work they tried to blitz. Then they tried to drop back 7 or 8. Then they tried to play a conservative Cover 2 and then they worked on using a zone blitz and spying. The zone blitz and spying probably had the most success, but it wasn't exactly stopping Romo. I expect the Eagles to do the zone blitz and spying, which they did in week 15 last year.

In the second game last year, Jim Johnson played alot of coverage schemes, surprisingly. And they were almost the exact same ones the Browns did last weekend. It wasn't until Gurode went down when he started bringing the house.

Yes-Romo has slowly, but surely matured. Nonetheless, it will be very interesting to see what schemes JJ brings.

Yea, one of the interesting things about last year was how Jim Johnson switched up his strategies for that last game. He really lived up to his reputation there and came up with something that Romo hadn't *really* seen to date.

It'll be interesting to see if they try the same thing or add some wrinkles. My guess is, early in the season, they'll go with the same stuff that worked late in the season last year and see if Romo can adjust to it. Also they'll want to test that O-Line with the blitz, since their secondary is *much* better than the Brown's secondary and can support the blitz.

The Vikings did similar things to Romo that the Eagles did in week 15. The Vikes also put a LB on Owens with a corner over the top from time to time and tried to use Kevin Williams to spy on Romo. I didn't think either worked.

I think the Eagles will show blitz and try to get Dallas to guess whether it's a full blitz or a zone blitz and the key is Dallas will have to run effectively on the zone blitzes.

Great post.

Jim Johnson is a great coordinator, he will give Romo a challenge, but our coaches should be able to adjust to whatever they bring.

Yea, that's why I used the (*really*). He'd seen it, but not in the way the Eagles had used it.

The Eagles always fake/time blitzes really well, I'm sure they will do that again.
