Don't get me wrong, here. I love the pick. With Free and Smith, the Cowboys potentially have a great pair of book end tackles for the next decade. But do you really think he's ready to start immediately? He seems a little young, and tackle can be a difficult position to learn.

Unless he gets hurt, yeah I'm 100% sure he's starting from day one.

I don't think people are complaining about taking a tackle, only who we took and where we took him. Would you be complaining if we took Sherrod at #9? How many people would be complaining if we had traded down with Jacksonville, picked up a 2nd and still got one of the top offensive linemen?

Probably alot of people. They'd complain that we passed up on the higher rated guy to get "cute"

But after the tremendous outcry for as long as I can remember about not addressing the OL, they do it finally and get the top guy available and some of those same people are still whining.

Jacksonville offered us the same thing Washington got -- Nos. 16 and 49.

Based on Jerry's comments, we thought that was too far to drop and still get one of the two guys we had targeted (presumably Smith and Watt).

There's really not much complaining. In fact, in an earlier thread, someone was saying there was about as little complaining about this pick as any first rounder he could remember, and several people agreed.

Yeah, that was me. I'm still stunned at how little reaction there was immediately after the pick. Typically, right after we pick, the fanbase is already split in half on the guy. Last night, I'd say 95% of ppl were on board.

Actually the blocking assignments for tackles are the easiest to learn, especially LTs. However, it is the most demanding physically as they are usually matched against the defense best pass rusher. If Smith's athletic gifts are close to what has been reported, he will make the transition without any significant problems.

Been on this board a long time. Been reading post after post for years about how Jones and the Cowboys neglect the OL and thats why they cant win championships. In the last few seasons I saw our OL definitely cost us one postseason game, and was a major factor in losing another. We dont try to focus on OL building in the draft, or have to waste too mcuh money on free agents.

Fast forward to about 930 or so tonight. We take the top rated OL with the 9th pick of the draft. A guy who can probably start immediately at either OT position. Not only that, said guy is only 20 yrs old and is just beginning to fill out.

And people complain.

All too often there are those who have that 1 or 2 guys they want and if Dallas fails to get them they will complain.

I admit Smith was not my 1st choice but I do recognize his talent and he clearly fits a major need this team has had.

I'm not sure that we haven't tried to adress the line in early rounds we just haven't been very good at it. But hey even the Colts had a pretty high OT pick go bust so who knows. I had read that Castonszo was more NFL ready from day one but not as much upside so I preferred him. Hopefully Smith turns out to be the pro bowler he wants to be.

Fact is we won today. We got protection for Romo, and with the weapons we have our offense is going to take a step up.

Its a process. Its not only the draft, but free agency as well.

There's a lot more going down before training camp.... we still have court issues btw.

Look at 1989...some QB named Troy, spent half his plays looking up at the sky, or so it seemend. When the OL started improving, the more vertical he stayed. And we know what happened after that.

Just the amount of athleticism that we added to our offense, is a big deal. Take away Colombo and add Smith and you've not only made the line MUCH more athletic... but you've gone from being a left handed running team to being ambidextrous.

I wasn't too fond of the pick because I was hoping for a little trade back and still get him but this is definitely Jasons pick. I wouldn't be surprised if we took leshoure in the second round. Jason wants to pound the ball and then have Tony throw to whoever he wants when the time comes.
