Yesterday I have started having problems with my Internet Explorer. I keep getting the message that IE has encountered a problem and must shut down. I have ran a spyware scan and virus scan but still having the problem. About 2 weeks ago I upgraded to the newest IE version. How can I go back to my older version of IE. Hoping that might be the problem

Been a LOOONG time since I did anything with IE so take this with a grain of salt.

Start Button.
Control Panel
Add Remove Programs
On the side there is a Windows component option...click that.

Should bring up a list of things and I THINK IE option is in there.

First I would try and do your Windows Updates again. Sometimes you can do it with new Windows things and think you have everything only to find out you need to go back a few times before it is all done.

I would also see if you can try and download the new IE again before removing it...this MAY give you something along the lines of you have the newest version installed. In that case try doing what I mentioned earlier.

Hope it works...as it has been so long since I worked with IE.

If all else fails....

You can download and use the Firefox web browser. I have been using it for years and have never went back to IE.

A long time ago there might have been problems. But they have corrected them since.

Just make sure if you install firefox to also install the java package with it. If you don't install the java package you might have trouble with some sites.

Would that be a different java package than I already have? I had to install Java on my computer because XP does not come with it.

You'll have to install the java plugin for firefox also.

Yes.

I keep IE on my home computer because the wife is used to using that one, plus I have my own bookmarks and homepage on firefox while she has her bookmarks and homepage on IE.

You'll have IE on your Windows box whether you like it or not, it's embedded into the Windows code and can't be uninstalled. This was what got Microsoft in hot water back in the 90s with the DOJ.

On a sorta OT, theres a rumor that MS is going to embed Windows Desktop search into their next operating system. Google is already crying foul, should get interesting.....

I have never tried it but you do have the option to uninstall IE in XP SP2.
