I was just reading a thread on another board and it got me wondering....

I've often heard the expression "Owned" used whenever someone punks another person. But what does "pwned" mean? How about "own3d"?

At first I thought those were just typos, but I've been seeing them more and more frequently. Anyone know?

I don't know the history of that but I have seen it too... they also use pr3n or p3ron for porn at times...

I don't get it unless it is a way to get by filters of some sort...

I wasn't aware of the alteration of the word "porn". I guess I'm just not as hard up as you are. :p:

Well own3d, is owned in l337 or leet, which is compuer gamers lingo talking with letter and numbers in their place. Link

** far a pwned here: Link
1. pwned
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."

OR

"That team totally pwned us."

Sometimes 3 is used in place of E just backwards.

One other thing about the P's is that at one time Phone Freaks were big but they spelled Freak like this....Phreak.

Phone Phreaks were guys that learned and used the tones used by telephones where they could call anywhere in the world for free. Some really interesting stories about those guys....guys named Whistler (yes like the guy from the Robert Redford Movie Sneakers) Some blind guys learned how to actually whistle the tones the phone companies used. Also another guy called Captain Crunch who used a plastic whistle he got from a box of Capt Crunch Cereal.

Later some guys made "boxes" that would help manipulate the tones....there are stories of these guys linking into major companies telephone hookups then calling around the world bouning through different countries and then calling themselves on a phone next to them....totally untraceable....cool part about this was that since the connection was being bounced around so much they guy could ask a question and then have time to answer it because of the delay.

This lead to some guys making these boxes (which were called black boxes if I remember) for some of the Mob because they could reroute calls all over the world and make it hard to trace, plus cut down on phone costs.

Other boxes were made for other things and they had a different color code for some of those but the phone boxes were the most famous.

Trick's ideas probably play into it as well.

Edit...well I guess I got completely pwned about why use the P...but was right on the E/3 and also the stories I talked about the phone phreaks are real.

A message board normally has interaction between different people...like this one, one guy says something then another guy can say something.

Blogs or web logs, are normally just for a guy to write down his ideas ( like an online diary) just for other people to read not so much for them to respond.

Kinda like Hostile... some threads he posts in actually become his own personal blog... :D

I use "PWN3D" often. Just means owned.

Also, "fora" means forum.

"teh" means the.

+1 = I agree

I'm still trying to figure out what "bukkake" means. If it means what I think it means, it won't be used on this site. Not unless they create a pron forum.

"fap fap fap" is what you do b4 the bukkake happens.

I better stop now b4 I get myself in trouble. ;)

It was not DOS...it was a Unix based program called DCR (Data Capture and Retrieval).

It was funny....all that was there was a Monitor (one color on the screen..green), a Keyboard and a network wire to the main server and the backups were done on either those large reel looking tapes or the hard tapes.

I hated using those large tapes when we had to write the work and save it...half the times the tapes would not save or any little piece of dust would prevent them from writing.

Hey this was in the early 90's lol.....really shocking to see how much it has changed.

I remember in school we had TSR-80s from tandy, basic puter language...computer monitor,keyboard and guts all in one case lol.

I remember when Floppy Discs were really floppy lol.

Later I got a cool Commodore 64 computer....that was about the only HOME computer you could afford at the time....the TSR80's were outrageous a couple a grand at the time which would be like paying 2-3 times that for a computer now.

A lot of this stuff started in Mud's and has since been bloated with online gaming. Things like Ultima Online; ever quest; DAOC; WOW etc etc

It is the equivalent of sort hand witting back in the day and some of it is just goofy stuff from grinding out levels and dorking around in chat

Ones that pop up in a lot of the games and spill over into the rest of the web

lol = laughing out loud
rlmao = really laughing my arse off
ty = Thank you
grats or gratz (both are acceptable) = congratulation
Ding or Dingage = you leveled
pwnd or owned= you got that one early
np = no problem
rdy = ready
gtg (has two meaning) = good to go or got to go (have to log of)

These are just some examples for you

I started in the puter business in 93 when DOS and Win31 were the standard for pc's or as I like to call it....The Good Ole Days :D
