Rookie seasons are difficult for any player, but J.J. Wilcox had it worst than most. Your first year in the NFL should be filled with excitement, but J.J.’s excitement quickly turned to sorrow when his mother lost her lengthy battle with Lupus last August, just a few weeks before the start of the regular season. After spending time home with his family, J.J. returned to the team and continued his hard work with a newfound motivation.. to make his mother proud up in heaven. Now, almost a year later, Wilcox is once again in the running for a starting safety spot next to Barry Church. From what he told me, he seems to be up for the challenge.

“I’ve been studying the game a little bit more.” Said Wilcox at the Strikes for Kids Draft Party on Thursday. “I feel like I’ve improved my technique. I just need to keep improving my game and perfecting my craft. I’m going to work on the things that I can control and let God handle the rest.”

Wilcox started out as a running back, but converted to the Safety position in his last year in college. While such a drastic change could throw off some guys, Wilcox seemed unaffected. In fact, he excelled in his new role and has steadily improved since then. Wilcox believes that his experience on offense will be advantageous to him in the battle for the open Safety spot.

I'm not going to lie, I see Wilcox as the replacement for Church and NOT as our current, true free safety.

Sadly, Matt Johnson is the only true free safety we currently have on the roster.

Really? I see Church as the next defensive captain, and a player who's going to be here for a long time. We're going to have a rotation at the S position, with Wilcox as the obvious expected starter on the other side. But I'm really hoping Johnson can stay on the field in camp, because I want to see how the snaps shake out between him and Jeff Heath.

Based on what?

Wilcox was one of the best Safeties that I've seen in one on one coverage drills against WRs at the Senior Bowl. He was better than several of the CBs going against the same WRs.

He has plenty of physical ability to play FS. The question is all in how he develops mentally.

I just see him more as an in-the-box safety. He was torched over and over again last year. I don't care what he did at the Senior Bowl anymore; he was pretty much awful in coverage last year, with the exception of that tipped ball @ Philadelphia. Nothing else stands out to me...

Yeah he performed well at the Senior Bowl.

Our safeties will be

SS: Barry Church
FS: JJ Wilcox

By the end of this season. Matt Johnson will not stick, because he won't be healthy. Jeff Heath will be a backup.

I'm still holding out hope for Matt Johnson, but yesterday he heard there was a draft and he caught a bad cold.
