Ireland talking draft "horizontal board":

i brought this up the other day after norm talked to ireland. Was ireland on with jen engle today or something.

This is what I found so interesting, when he said we have a horizontal board. Not just going to the next best guy down, but taking into consideration all things.

Interesting. Gosselin and ireland will be on weekly with norm until the draft so it should be fun for the next 6 weeks.

Here's my take -- horizontal refers to grouping players according to "bands" -- a band would include players who are so close together rating-wise that the differences between them are not clearly distinguishable. For example, we might have a "band" that represents the elite players in the draft, a band representing the next tier, etc. The idea is that there will always be players ranked so close together than it becomes arbitrary to give one a rank of 19 and one a rank of 20. A vertical board would be one where you give a rank to each player and pretend that 19 is a greater value than 20 even if the difference is tiny.

I would assume that within a band, choices are dictated by need.

When Ireland talks about guys dropping he means that players who are ranked in the better bands would be considered regardless of their position because the represent such great value.

I would assume that withing each band the players still carry some kind of vertical rank based on a set of criteria that Ireland uses.

This is precisely what I was trying to get across.

What he means by a horizonal board, and not a vertical board is represented like this. Here are a couple of guys, for this year as they are typically viewed by most people this is obviously a very short list:

High Round 1: Jamarcus Russell, Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, Brady Quinn
Middle Round 1: Dwayne Jarrett, Jarvis Moss, Marshawn Lynch
Low Round 1: PAUL POSLUSZNY, AARON ROSS, DWAYNE BOWE
High Round 2: Justin Blalock, Sidney Rice, Brandon Meriweather

Then when your pick comes you have to weight how much the guy is a need on the team, compared to other guys avaible at other positions. Keep in mind that most teams do not necissicarilly have 32 players listed with a first round grade. The year we drafted Jason Witten, we had him as one of like 25 or 26 players (I think that was the number) that we had given a first round grade to.

With all due respect to Yeagermeister, Ireland wasn't referring to the vertical board that was hung on the wall and used during the pre-Parcells era.

He was talking about this horizontal board that is used while it lays flat--the one that spelled out "Jerricho Cotchery" so fast that Parcells only caught a few of the letters, and we drafted Jacob Rogers.

Bah! If we had used either this or Yaeger's board, we would have drafted better than we did in the late '90's....

We couldn't have done any worse :D

There is also the matching of player skills to the scheme you are using. A really good 4-3 DE might not have the value for the Cowboys that a slightly lower ranked Olb would. Of course at a certain point someone of very high ranking who has dropped far might be worth getting even if they don't fit the style or needs of the team.

I am pretty sure New Orleans wasn't planning on getting a running back in last year's draft, but they made do....

This looks right to me as well.

Here is my idea of what it is using last years Kiper Report.

1. Reggie Bush 9.7
2. Mario Williams 9.6
3. Matt Leinart 9.5
4. Vince Young 9.5
5. D. Ferguson 9.5
6. AJ Hawk 9.5
7. Vernon Davis 9.4
8. Michael Huff 9.4
9. Brodrick Bunkley 9.3
10. Haloti Ngata 9.3
11. Kamerion Wimbley 9.3
12. Chad Jackson 9.3
13. Santonio Holmes 9.3
14. Winston Justice 9.3
15. DeAngelo Williams 9.3

It's still vertical visually, but their are some players that have the same rating or value and are on the same plane.
