Irony of Romo's offseason focus

Several times in the offseason we heard how Tony Romo was working to emulate Tom Brady in the pocket. Specifically he focused on not moving forward into the rush when he was going through his reads. He found that his happy feet were making it tougher on the guards and center.

Check out the play where the aforementioned Tom Brady gets hurt. Note what he does as he's waiting for Moss to get open.

(Apologies if this was already covered. I haven't read every single thread in the last 5 days.)

Watching Romo this week scared me ALOT. I dont want him to get tooooo comfortable and not allow him to be quick off his feet. I personally didnt see anything wrong with his stance in the pocket last year..

I think that either Romo OR Garret (can't remember which one) said that, because his feet were unsettled, it would affect his throws - especially the deep ones. Like the throw to T.O. in the playoff game (the one were T.O. had beaten the CB on the go route, but Romo underthrew him because he didn't throw with his feet set - something to that effect).

What I find so interesting about Romo is his ability to emulate other QB's. He can copy Favre's style when he wants to and now has given himself the ability to be Brady-like in footwork. He's like a superhero that can take in the powers of other superheroes.

That's a good catch, Brady moved forward in the pocket when he didn't need to. If he hadn't done that, then he might still have his ACL and MCL.

I suspect he moved forward because he was going to throw it deep. Contrary to popular opinion, Brady actually doesn't throw a very good deep ball. I think he was trying to "cheat up" in anticipation of throwing it deep to Moss. And he still underthew him (and not because of the hit, he had already planted and was close to release when he got hit).

It was not his stance that he was worried about. He just realized that he would drift in the pocket from time to time. Doing that changed the angle of attack for the defense and his o-lineman. It would lead to pressure where as if he stayed back in the pocket he would have more time. He can still move his feet(Peyton Manning does) and stay in the same spot. He just wanted to avoid drifting around and chose to follow how Brady stands back in the pocket. I don't see it as a problem because he still showed his quick release in the first game.

A perfect example of what happens when you drift in the pocket was Jason Campbell on the very first play of the Commanders first game against the Giants. The Commanders o-line actually did a good job against the Giants defense, but Campbell drifted right into a sack.
