Irvin Made An Interesting Point About Our OL...

...He said on the Mike & Mike interview that Dallas doesn't have one offensive lineman that, as a player on the field, is just plain ole' mean and nasty and gives the OL a tough guy personality. Erik Williams came to my mind as Irvin mentioned this. (I can still see Big E dominating his opponent in the 2nd NFC Championship game against San Fran and then during a timeout pouring water on his face and the camera in slo-mo showing him blowing water up in the air like a huge killer whale!) What a tough guy Big E was on that OL!

The other thing Irvin mentioned was that on the field these guys, in his opinion, don't pass the eyeball test. Those were his words. I'm not sure I agree with that, because Flo and Gurode are big guys, but that's what he said.

So, I gave Irvin's comment about a tough guy mentality some thought. Do we have a tough guy on our OL?

1)Adams...quiet, big teddy bear type.

2)Kosier...no real personality, quiet, does his job.

3)Gurode...definitely a good guy, not mean and nasty. Example: Haynesworth incident. Gurode forgives and only responds by repeatedly saying "Why did he do it?"

4) Rivera...looks like he could be a tough, mean guy, but he's not. He's just a solid workman like vet. Has some leadership qualities, but not a nasty type player.

5) Columbo...if there is one guy who has potential to be a tough guy it's Columbo. So far however, he's just knocking the rust off and trying to get the job done.

Just something I hadn't thought about before and thought I'd throw it out there for discussion.

Tough is not Columbo's problem--he is tough, however, he lacks the talent required to be a top OT in the NFL

Ted Washington, I think. Big E hit him in the shoulder, and broke Washington's leg. Now that's power!

What makes you say that? Because he had a hard time against one of the greatest DE to play the game? And don't forget, Strahan only got 2 sacks and neither went THRU Columbo. Columbo will be good.. and anchor that right side for a long time.

I heard Mike say this too this mourning on the Mike and Mike show and that is what I love about Mike, he speaks his mind and stirs the pot. Even got old Tiki Barber upset.

But anywho, I dont know about that.

For instance, Larry Allen was one quietest guys on the football throughout his tenure in Dallas.

But on the playing field, he let his play do the talking for him and just totally dominated guys with his Physical Talent.

Also, Parcells has mentioned when asked about Mark Columbo, that he likes the guy because he is tough, a fighter and never gives up.

Also, Marco Rivera is well known to have a nasty streak in him. Before I took my Cowboys site down, I had a picture another poster on another board sent me showing Marco Rivera kicking or punching none other then Terrell Owens while he was down (will have to find that).

I think if you have talent, it wont matter how gritty and mean you are.

I think there is a lack of focus (maybe even smarts), talent and Coaching at work here.

Also, who is the leader on the offensive line? The guys with the most skins on the wall, Rivera and Flozell are playing horrible.

- Mike G.

I remember gurode coming out of colorado, and one of the things i noticed was his mean streak and toughness. He played like a defensive lineman. He practically put Chris Brown on the map. Remember that colorado/ nebraska game when brown ran for 6 td's? Gurode paved the way for those runs. I think gurose has plenty of nasty in him, rivera as well.

And you know this how?

After just a couple of games in Dallas? After coming off major surgury with a couple of games in the windy city?

He is still virtually a rookie, you know.

Patience, my friend, patience.

He has the talent as well. He lacks the experience due to injuries keeping him off the field.

Well, this makes me like Rivera better, at least.

How far away is Procter, anyway? I rewatched the second half of the Giants game recently, and was surprised how often pressure came from Rivera not being able to get to his block on time.

Yep he was considered a tough guy with a mean streak from draft reports...at least that is what I remember.
