Tiki needs to dominate in the playoffs or else shut up about the Hall Of Fame. His numbers are outstanding, but Little Train James put up astounding numbers too. For all the numbers, did Tiki actually win anything? What did he do in the Superbowl against the Ravens?
Roger Craig-- great running back, multi-Superbowl champ, not a HOFer.
Terrell Davis-- awesome running back, Superbowl MVP, league MVP, 2000+ yards in a season, not a HOFer.
Herschel Walker-- one of the highest all-purpose yardage guys ever, a fantastic back, and pro-football record holder for rushing yards in a season-- not a HOFer.
Rickey Watters-- flat out dominant back who statistically crushes Tiki in every category and has a Superbowl ring, not a HOFer.
Running backs are the most highly scrutinized "marquee" positions for the HOF.
You need to:
1 Be prolific. This takes endurance, but I think an unofficial cutoff is that you need to be in the top 10 in rushing at the time you retire. This is the most critical thing for backs. If you don't have this, pray you have 2-3 in spades.
2 Dominate in the playoffs and in big regular season games. Great backs make their greatest plays here. Emmitt Smith became a HOFer because of this long before he even approached the rushing title. This wasn't enough for Terrell Davis.
3. Demonstrate you have "it", that great ability to not only dominate the very best and take over a game, but also elevate your teammates. Be a player that throws opposing DC's and defensive players into fits. Do this every year you are in the league. Earl Campbell and Gale Sayers got into the HOF because of this, and they are rare exceptions.
4. Don't be an injury prone b***h, a primadonna/whiner, or an above average back on a passing offense. This doomed WCO puppies James Brooks, Roger Craig, and Rickey Watters despite their longevity and great stats. A combo of injuries and WCO might greatly hurt Shaun Alexander's chances unless he has another season like 2005. Tiki's whining about Irvin's comments really hurt him IMO.
