I can promise that I don't waste my breath. There was a dog that stayed at the house for seven years and I never named him. I have even less affection for a cat.

I call BS. It is impossible to live that long with a dog and not be attached.

This may not be popular, but I think roadside memorials should not be allowed. It is a distraction. It is not their property. And they don't erect them other places where people die, like hospitals and homes.

I have always thought roadside memorials were kind of odd. The last thing I want is to be constantly reminded of the spot where a loved one tragically lost their life.

It used to just be small white crosses. I can't speak for the rest of the country but we have bikes now and elaborate shrines.

I come from a rural background. I don't believe in any type of abuse concerning animals, but the notion that animals have the same rights as humans is a joke. PETA has gone to the extreme, so has many otherwise normal people that supports animal right agendas. At no time in history has animals been placed on the same level as humans to the extent they are today. It hasn't been that many years ago that they had cockfights at the White House. In some places it is now a felony. I just don't agree with the direction that it is going. There are much more serious problems with the human population that needs attention.

I care because I think it is very tacky and presumptuous to build a shrine on someone else's property. I also think it is a senseless tradition because as I've already said, if someone falls off the roof of their house, no shrine. If someone gets hit by a falling tool at work, no shrine. If someone dies in surgery because no one knew they were allergic to the anesthesia, no shrine. There is nothing special about an accident on the road to warrant shrines being built. I don't like it. Thus I care about it as a topic and speak my mind because I have that right. Snails don't hurt me either, but if I feel like talking about them, I will.

You may disagree, but my point is that people have gone further with animal rights than they have in certain human rights. I like animals. I have had goats, cattle, chickens etc. and have always made sure that they had the best of care, but at no time do I think of them as anything more than what they are. Yes, having a rural background does expose people to a much harsher, but more realistic view of the relationship between man and animals. You grow up with a understanding that they are food or entertainment, sometimes both.

Sad part is millions of dollars are given to peta and hsus because of the sad commercials..But if you look at their shelters they have a 99% kill rate. Nothing but a giant lobbying machine

There was a car accident about a mile down the road from where I lived about two years ago. A teenager was driving out of control, hit a tree and died. Since that day a shrine has been in that exact spot. The last two years around Christmas someone even put up a artificial Christmas tree there.

It doesn't particularly bother me, but when I drive past that shrine each day I think to myself "Really???" and wonder if it's still necessary. You can't help but look at it because it is a distraction. I'm not against roadside memorials but perhaps a time limit of say a month is long enough. Anything more than that seems excessive to me. And yes I expect another Christmas tree in about a month.

I didn't make myself clear. Animals shouldn't be abused, but I sure don't treat them like humans. I have always had livestock of some sort. I understand at the end of the day that they are food or money if I sell them. The dog that stays at my house is well taken care of, but at the end of the day, it serves a as a watchdog. I also hunt and fish quite a bit. Humans have gone too far in many cases such as the one that this thread was started about. Our society is more concerned with animal abuse than child abuse. That trend is something that concerns me.
