In considering David Irving going forward, it's interesting to me when he's showing up.

I don't watch film or have a statistical analysis to support what I'm about to say. It's truly an opinion of a fan.

It looks as if most of Irving's impact has been late in games. In fact, it has been when we need him most...critical times.

I know this kid came with some baggage. That said, he just turned 23. He's 6'7", 270+ pounds with the wingspan of a condor. When I watch interviews with him, he seems humble and intelligent. The upside with him seems very, very high.

He's coming up large mostly late in games. I think most of his sacks, forced fumbles and pass deflections have been in the 4th quarter. Is he showing up early in games and I'm just not seeing it? If he isn't showing up early, is it a scheme issue?

I absolutely love what I see from him, I'd just love to see some of those amazing plays on his first series. I think one of the keys for us in the coming playoffs is to get Irving going early and I'm not sure what that takes.

Thoughts?

He seems to be a closer-type guy good teams need to make a big play when the D needs to get off the field.
We are lucky to have him.

What baggage? He did not come with any baggage...he had some issues in college where he was kicked off the team. And he went to a smaller college. But he has had no issues since.
But as mentioned, 6-7, 273, 7 foot wingspan, and he still has a 40 inch vertical jump.
And he is just getting started.

He will be an ERFA, so he will get a tender offer at least, if not just an outright contract.

I'm praying he is our missing link so to say. This team with a true young franchise passer rusher will be a force for years.

I think we just found our Haley with respect to the '92 team.. just younger and at the end of the season.. This kid has superstar written all over him. This defense is starting to gel.

He had at least two almost sacks (hurries) on the first two drives of the game. Also had a pass deflection early in the 3rd I believe. But he seems to play with high energy throughout instead of wearing down like some of the other guys...

Overview
Charged with domestic assault in November 2013 after an incident with the mother of his child. Was suspended for a game, but charges were dropped two months later. In April 2014, took part in VEISHEA, which was the largest student run festival in the nation, bringing in tens of thousands of visitors to the campus each year. A riot ensued and a picture of Irving in contact with a stop sign made its way onto social media. He was charged with fifth-degree theft, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He was dismissed from the team following the incident.

"He's got baggage that will have to be combed over but boy does he have talent. Somebody is going to take him." - NFC North scout

Bottom Line
Irving's problems off the field are a concern and he's been vocal on social media about his disappointment regarding how things went down at Iowa State. Needs more weight on his frame, but he might have addressed that issue during his time off. Has ability to 2-gap with length and is an intriguing 3-4 defensive end project with draftable talent. Talent and traits give him a shot to hear his name called on Day 3, despite not playing in 2014.

I didn't mean baggage that couldn't be overcome. But there were certainly some red flags. Hopefully, all just maturity related. But it was enough to cause him to fall completely out of the draft.

I'm not running the man down. I'm extremely excited he's here with us. My gut says he has grown up and won't be putting himself in bad situations.

The sign incident was what I was thinking of, but could not remember exactly what. But that was it, i knew it wasn't anything major.
I did not know about the other issue.

I just know in interviews he seems pretty humble and is humbled to be a part of the team. And appreciates his opportunities.

The dv probably scared some teams since he was drafted around the year of DV with ray rice. The stop sign thing combined with the dv just made things worse. The sign by itself would not really concern me, college kids being college kids.

He very nearly had a sack on one of the Lions first drives of the game, and Stafford made a nice elusive move to avoid it. Against Tampa his biggest impact came late in the game when he took over the 4th quarter, for sure. But against Detroit, he was getting pressure all game.
