Go ask Bell he has a couple 1 game suspension
He originally got 2 games.....one for the possession and one for the DUI

it was later dropped to just one game

LBell also wormed out of his latest suspension......he says he couldn't get to the test because he couldn't drive after knee surgery.... so he had his 4 games reduced to 3 and he was reset to the lower level in the drug testing program and his next fail will still only be 4 games and not 10

Here is the NFL’s current schedule of penalties for marijuana positives.

1. First violation: Referral to a substance-abuse program.

2. Second violation: Fine equivalent to two game checks. (The player’s NFL team isn’t necessarily informed, as the punishment does not affect playing time).

3. Third violation: Fine equivalent to four game checks. (Again, the team isn’t necessarily informed).

4. Fourth violation: Four-game suspension.

5. Fifth violation: 10-game suspension.

6. Sixth violation: One-year banishment.
Plus after stage1 if you stay clean for 90 days you get reset to 'never happened'

After stage 2-4 you have to stay clean for 2 years to reset to 'never happened'

After stage 4 you can never be reset unless you get special dispensation from the Pope

it is really hard to get suspended for recreational drugs in the NFL.....they get tested once a year at OTAs in April/May or at camp in July......if you pass you won't get tested again until next year unless you get arrested or ratted out

After each game 10 players from each team get tested for PEDs and there are other random offseason tests for PEDs

Thanks from the additional information. The current NFL policy seems more than fair.

was not aware a 4th strike for pot is when game suspensions kick in. One could argue the league is relatively lenient. I'm curious in what's involved in the league substance abuse program. And I'd think informing the team would help someone in getting treatment for substance abuse. Would also think the team would need to be made aware if the violation involves player compensation.

If you're continually failing tests that you know are forthcoming, I'd say you have a problem.

Good info, thanks.
Here is some more info

What a neat deal, the league grabs two pay checks, but the player still has to play the games.

If the team isn't notified, who tells the payroll dept to send the money to the nfl?

Does the IRS know who gets the pay?

Oh I know. Seems fishy to me. Guess some are favorites over others. Not only that but he was arrested for possession and a firearm

The player doesn't get his paycheck at all for those weeks

The team actually gets the salary cap space back as well.......... quite a good deal for the team but at least the player can play

This is another reason to restructure your large base salary down to the minimum......Tom Brady had a 15m salary last year but took 14m as a signing bonus leaving 1m as a base salary...when he got a 4 game suspension it only cost 4/17ths of 1m instead of 4/17ths of 14m.......over 3.2m saved

But the team also gets fined if it has multiple players suspended at the same time and over the course of the year

If it was during the off season and he's not failed a test previously, he wouldn't be getting tested. Guys not in the program only take a single test a year.

It amazes me there is no policy in place for immediate testing when such an event happens. Theres little excuse to actually fail enough test to be suspended.
