Garrett is in the last year of his deal. In order for him to get an extension - is a playoff appearance enough? In and out - no postseason wins.

I'm not asking for what you would do. I'm asking for your opinion of what Jerry will do. Or do you think Jerry will need to see more than a playoff appearance?

If the team miraculously fields a competent defense and makes the playoffs in 2014, I believe Jerry gives him another 2-3 years.

Depends

If its 8-8 and we squeak in and then get blown out in the first round, I don't see how you can possibly give him another year.

It depends. If we have another year like 2007 (yeah, right), have 12 or 13 wins then get upset in the playoffs, Garrett will likely get an extension.

If we barely get into the playoffs with 8 or 9 wins and get destroyed in the WC game, it may not be enough.

To me, this coaching staff needs to win in the playoffs to keep their jobs.

Please...if wonder boy gets this team in the playoffs (which more than likely means a NFC East crown) Jerry will have his extension papers all written up before wildcard weekend.

I think Garrett is as close to a son to Jerry as an unrelated man can get and thus any sign of forward progress would mean another 2-3 years of Garrett in the lead role.

Jerry has done it again. He has bought himself another year with a sure fire scapegoat if they once again underperform. Jerry wants Garrett to succeed obviously. First, for ego purposes. Second, despite reports Jerry is very slow on the trigger to fire people who he is close too and the Garrett family has been loyal to Jerry going back decades. This is Especially for those who don't disrupt the jerry circus atmosphere year after year. Lastly, despite not much success jerry loves this setup. He is the mouthpiece of the franchise, does not need to worry about ruffling any feathers, him and son both have talk shows where they say puzzling and or absurd things week after week, and despite no playoffs people are still talking about the Cowboys.

IMO this team is going backwards. Once Romo is no longer elite or retires, I predict that is when we will see the bad years. The week 17 win or go home games will feel like the 90 s dynasty when we are trying to find the next QB. I hope I am wrong but I just see things getting worse, not better moving forward.

Who knows? I think Jason is one of the very bottom HC's in the league & see no upside. Then Jerry comes out with that stupid comment about him getting on the job training. I don't get the love affair. Maybe that's a good thing.

Ah, yeah, in order for JG to keep his job we have to win the division or enter as a wildcard (not gonna happen) then win at least 1 playoff game. Having said all this with our schedule next year it'll be a tough task.

If Jason gets this group to the playoffs with next yrs schedule..... Well then he deserves an extension
I wish I were optimistic about the chances. And really we are all speculating about next yr bring a make or break season for Garrett. Nowhere , at any time, have I seen jerry make this statement

I think Jerry will take any opportunity to extend Garrett. If we win the division at 7-9 we will have Garrett for 5 more years.

Jerry will look for every reason to keep Garrett because it means he can remain "comfortable" as the voice and face of the team.

Of course a playoff appearance would be enough.

There are no performance metrics for this team, there is only Jerry's comfort level with his personal mining experiment.

garrett is the trainee and jerry is the trainer
admitting the trainee failed is a bad reflection on the trainer which his ego cannot handle

i said to you guys early last year that garrett is here playoffs or not, i think the same is true next year

after all what good is a 4 year process that cant become a 5 year process

I see no way they are making the playoffs. They were basically handed the nfce and still lost it. The nfce wont be this bad again for another 30 years. So I bet they finish 3rd in the nfce next year and garretts still here the season after.

I don't even know because I've given up thinking Jerry wants to win now. I have a feeling this is going to be like Kubiak in Houston. Nice man and players liked him but showed year after year he wasn't HC material. After having a D coordinator forced on him he won but still made the same mistakes to get them knocked out of playoffs. Finally, 8 years in, wheels fell off because of the same coaching he had done before. Garrett isn't HC material. There will be a year where the universe comes together and we make the playoffs. Jerry will be like "told ya so" and give him 3 more years. Years from now when he is fired we will be wondering where all the years went. If he is fired it will be a total collapse of a season next year.

Great post.

Next question should be, does anybody on here think we have a chance in hell of making the playoffs even with a good draft?

Next year is a complete throw away year.

I think so as well. What sucks is Romo will make it interesting as always, but it won't be enough, and everybody will all be year older for the new regime. 2015 will be our last year with this core to make that run.
