I was a die-hard for most of my life. Would spend ridiculous amounts of money on merchandise and Cowboys tickets and related travel. I even paid money at one point to be in the official fan club of the Cowboys, which had next to zero benefits for fans that are out of state. I would re-arrange any and every aspect of my life to ensure I was near a television to watch the Cowboys play. I once took a completely inconvenient and needlessly expensive trip to New York City to watch the Cowboys play the Giants on MNF (the "Black Cat" game).
My wife's aunt died young in January 2024 of a brain aneurysm. She was only in her 40's. And I spent that weekend driving from NC to the funeral service in the Tidewater area of VA, to the celebration of life in Upstate NY, back home. I woke up at 2AM that morning on little sleep to drive 10.5 hours home so that I could watch the Cowboys play the Packers in the playoffs. I was so amped up for that game and was running on adrenaline. I made it home barely in time for kickoff. Then the wheels came off the franchise that day, and that's when my fandom changed. They finally broke me. I vowed that day to never be fooled again and to never give this gang of losers any of my hard earned money again. I would no longer scream and yell at my television or allow myself to come unglued at home. They played the Panthers last season at Bank of America Stadium, which is less than 15 minutes from my driveway- and I had no interest in even accepting a free ticket. I knew they were going to lose the game, and they did in extraordinary fashion.
You can't depend on this team for literally anything but nostalgia and fond memories of long ago.
