Is Flo really that bad?

I haven't had the chance to concentrate on his play, but has his play been that bad where we get rid of him next year? He is only 31. If we keep him for a couple of more years, we can look towards WR or CB early in the draft instead of a starter at OT.

Thoughts?

No. He was not good early last season as he was still recovering from his ACL (large guys take longer). By the end of the season he was back to normal- a top 10 LT. (barely).

No. He's just a victim of all the folks on the board who can't understand that if a player isn't the best in the league at his position that it doesn't mean he sucks. As burm also noted, if you break the league into 3 tiers at OT, he'd be in the top.

While I agree of much of what you said...I disagree that he is top tier..actually if each tier has roughly 11 players...I think he is squarely in the 2nd tier

Look at his sacks, penalty figures- you will find he is in the top 10. And several of the experts that get deep into the subject like KCJoyner- consistently put him in the top 10.

top tier talent and ability----lower tier effort === lower second tier-maybe

do u think kcjoyner took into account how many of those plays fasano was there to babysit him? doubt it

Flo's contract seems like peanuts these days.

I'd like to see him back ... but no more than 3 year contract.

No he is not as bad as some people here seem to think. He's a good to very good LT.

My take:

On his best days he's a top 10. On his average days he's a top 15. On his bad days he can be pretty bad.

He's not really a liability and he's not really a strength. We could do much worse, but it would be hard to do better.

I like how you try to reason with people who don't know anything about football.

Folks -- in case you haven't been following, on the rare occassions that Burma and I agree it is because we are right.

He's average at pass protection. His 7.5 sacks allowed was 16th most in the NFL. But he's well above average in run blocking. All in all, he balances out to an above average player.

I never really know why some guys like Flozell are always in the fans doghouse, while other guys like Julius Jones can be equallly mediocre (if not worse) and get a free pass.

Ok name 10 better all around LT than Flozell right now...I'll wait.

still waiting :laugh2:

He's pretty good, and it would be hard to match what he does. The problem is going to be he might want a top 3-4 tackle contract, and someone would give it to him. So we can either pony up the dough or lose him and hope we get at least 75% of the same production for a lesser contract.

After reading this board for a couple of years now, I am of the opinion that half of our players are overated by our fans and the other half are underated. I think Flo gets in the underated half most of the time.

Roy gets in the underated most of the time too, based on his pass coverage skills and covering Shockey mainly. I, personally, am of the opinion that RW is an average SS in terms of covering ability and well above average in other aspects. ( for ex - very few Safeties can effectively cover the top TE in the NFL man to man)

In short I think our players get overly scrutinized and overly praised because that is who we watch every Sunday, while we see the other teams on occasion, and then when we do see highlights and so forth we compare Cowboys complete play to others highlights.

That is just the way it is IMO.

aikemirv, you pretty much have hit it. then you add to that some who are just in love with certain players; and others that flat out hate some players.
Its like a bowl of granola: fruits, nuts and flakes!!
