Is Henson a bust if Romo beats him for the backup job?

So many roads to (apparent in some cases) success that extend beyond the historical draft-high-and-groom tradition.

QBs don't tend to peak young, and some of the better ones lately have made it via a circuitous, even torturous journey.

All it really means, I guess, is there is no longer just one 'timetable' for an NFL quarterback.

I think Aikman's path colors a lot of the thinking around Henson, but I also think some fans either don't know or forget just how bad the 1989 Cowboys were. Starting Aikman and Walsh wasn't sacrificing much.

In contrast, the Dallas teams of this year and last looked to be relatively competitive headed into the season. Last year was derailed mostly by injury - Woodson's perhaps the greatest.

I've said this before, but I really think it's Romo who is in the hot seat this season. This is his 3rd season and he received a 'show us something soon or get out of here' type of contract similar to one Randall Williams got not too long ago (he obviously didn't end up showing anything).

I do think Henson has to show unquestioned improvemnet this season from last season...and I would think he would, just from the fact that he's back to practcing football everyday again from his layoff. Anywho, I think next season would be the 'show us something soon or get out' season for Henson.

No, Henson is a bust because he is almost 26 years old and has played in a grand total of 2 regular season NFL games and in those games has a total of 3 quarters played, 2 of which he played like a low tier HS QB.

I had to read this twice before annoiting it most idiotic post of the offseason, and I've read every one of badattitude's posts so that's saying something

Yeap! From the way it sounds he and Romo are both sucking right now. Hope time helps but so far not so good....
Read the latest tc reports, henson seems to have gatten his barrings.

If he doesn't win the #2 spot against a slug like Romo, Henson will never make it in the NFL. That's my opinion, anyway.

When BP feels that Henson is ready I'm sure Henson will come in and play like a Jeff Hostetler. BP will not allow him to play until he feels Henson is ready. I think Henson will be just fine and BP is doing everything he can to test and push him to the limit. The pressures of real game time situations will seem tiny in comparison to BP chewing his butt after every mistake. It doesn't really matter who #2 is because at this point BP would have more trust in Henson than in Romo if something were to happen to Bledsoe.

Why you calling Romo a "slug"?

IF Henson was as good as the "experts" claim he was, why hasn't he shown it on the field?

When I have seen Henson play, he looks confused, not confident. And don't give me the line that he needs more snaps.

IF he was as good as they said he was he would have outplayed Vinny last year!

I want ANY Cowboys QB to be great, what Cowboy fan wouldn't.

Sadly Henson WANTS to be great, but he doesn't have the talent.

Trade Henson now!

I'll be honest, I'm just a straight up Ags homer with this one, but I'd love to see McNeal on the Cowboys roster next year. Imagine if he was drafted and we were still trying out Dustin Long too. :p:

With 100+ votes, it looks like Cowboys fans are almost evenly split on the Henson issue. I think a lot of folks expect Henson to be ready now for this backup job and I can't blame 'em. I think one of the biggest things going against Henson if he falls behind Romo is that Parcells actually picked him to play last year so it would be a regression in my opinion.

Oh well, here's hopin' that Henson is the QB we all want him to be, and has a successful training camp.

Exactly. So it would make more sense to draft a qb on day 1 next year as a safety valve, rather than pinning all of our hopes on a long term project who may not make it.We don't have a shot at Leinhart next year because Detroit will probably trade up to get him, but we should take a shot at Omar Jacobs if he duplicates last years success and comes out as a junior. Also Reggie McNeal would be a good option if he duplicates last years success.

Our opportunity to draft a QB next year is not great IMO. We have had opportunities to draft QBs the past few drafts and we have elected to go in other directions. I would not bank on getting a 1st round QB next year. Also, I don't know that I would take McNeal in any case. A lot of football left, to be sure. However, at this, I think McNeal has a long way to go if he wants to be taken in the 1st round.

That's what he is. The guy is an undrafted free agent third stringer for life. He's done absolutely nothing for the Cowboys. If Henson can't hold him off, he's got major problems.

Evidently Parcells does not feel the same way because I doubt he would want a "Slug" on his team.

This question is too simplistic.

If both play well and Romo just goes lights out then it is asinine to say that Henson is a bust. Just becasue one player does well does not mean that the other is doing poorly.

Now if both are mediocre and Henson is suckign then yes it looks bad.

Henson's play dictates if hes a bust or not and not Romo's.

He wanted Eddie George, Vinny Testaverde, Marcellus Wiley, etc. If they don't qualify as slugs, who does? I didn't know the word slug would cause such an uproar. Let's just say Romo is not the kind of depth you look for in a quarterback, until he can prove otherwise.

Romo will be gone after this year.
