Let me start off by defining what “fixing the defense” might look like. For example, it may be something like moving the D rankings from last to somewhere at least in the middle of the pack- like 12th-16th. That might be good enough to be a playoff team that could make some noise. Not easy. Maybe not probable. But it is possible.
So back to the original question, “Is it possible to fix the defense in one year”? My answer is simple: Maybe. Doubtful, but possible. Its certainly not impossible. But in order to move this defense to at least decent, most of these factors must happen next season:
After the last qtr century, my mantra with this team is simple: “I will believe it when it happens.” I’m hoping year 26 Lady Luck is smiling on us. That’s probably our best chance.
So back to the original question, “Is it possible to fix the defense in one year”? My answer is simple: Maybe. Doubtful, but possible. Its certainly not impossible. But in order to move this defense to at least decent, most of these factors must happen next season:
- At least 2-3 defensive FAs have to have impact as starters or rotational players. The Cowboys signed 9 FAs this offseason, 6 of them on defense. None of them are “stars”, but if at least a couple of them are starters that play a key role, it’s an upgrade. For example Neal and Kazee are a talent upgrade at S if healthy. (Neal may play some LB) Urban and Basham are probably rotational players but if they can give us 15-20 quality snaps a game it’s an upgrade from last year. None of these guys have to be stars to help improve this D.
- At least 2 rookies must have immediate impact on D. As starters, and with promise that they have enough upside to grow into at least a 4 year major contributor to the defense. Whether it’s Surtain or Horn or some day 2 or 3 surprises, maybe we can get some impact from a couple of rookies. I remember in 2014 when 4th round rookie LB Anthony Hitchens developed into a solid player. Again, not a star but a solid, reliable player.
- New defensive coordinator Dan Quinn must make scheme fit the talent. As opposed to the other way around last year, where half the D looked like the Keystone Cops from the silent movie era, Quinn must make the defensive schemes support the talent. Confidence is needed to be restored and simplifying the scheme will make that process happen faster.
- Increase the number of sacks and takeaways. Not every team that has made major noise in the playoffs the last 21 years has been a top ranked defense. But all but a couple did have this common trait- lots of sacks and forced turnovers. Usually the combined number of sacks and turnovers of 60 or more is a golden ticket to at least a conference championship. The Cowboys have been just flat awful in the TO department for far too long. This must change.
- The offense can help the defense by avoiding a slow start and scoring early, taking pressure off defense at the beginning of the game. Last year this team had a first quarter TO in the first qtr 4 of the first 5 games. This team was often down 2-3 scores before even getting a drive going. That must change this year if we want to compete.
After the last qtr century, my mantra with this team is simple: “I will believe it when it happens.” I’m hoping year 26 Lady Luck is smiling on us. That’s probably our best chance.
