is it really that hard to evaluate offensive linemen?

it just seems like we haven't hit on offensive line in forever. The last offensive line starter we drafted, we got in 2002...

And we've missed on on OL in 2nd, 3rd rounds many times...

What is it in the translation to the pros that makes it so difficult to evaluate their talent from college?

Yes it is. In the NFL players are a lot faster, and a lot stronger. It's hard to tell if a lineman will be able to pick up on the pace and the more complicated assignments, it's almost as hard as drafting a QB IMHO.

Let's see, yeah look at Gallery, D'Brickashaw, Carey, Gross, and host of 1st rd talent that haven't lived up to their billing. Then look at the guys just this team in its history has picked up in the later rounds. I am more comfortable to taking an OL in rounds 2-7 then I am in the 1st, 1st rounders are supposed to contribute right away except for maybe a QB.

I guess you could say we missed on Marten obviously, but Parcells overruled scouts on Rogers and supposedly Peterman, so I dont know that we are "missing" as much as you think. Al Johnson was also a Parcells pick and he definitely wasnt worth it.

I prefer to go with the agile and agressive ones, I think Dallas needs to look at the SEC lineman more. Speaking of SEC lineman, the LT from Ole' Miss is a beast, Dallas should look to draft him.

Are you saying we should go more zone blocking than man on man blocking.

No I'm simply saying Dallas drafts too many stiffs and not enough natural athletes when it comes to offensive linemen.

2008: (none)

2007:
3rd Round: James Marten
4th Round: Doug Free

2006:
7th Round: Pat McQuistan

2005:
6th Round: Rob Pettiti

2004:
2nd Round: Jacob Rogers
3rd Round: Stephen Peterman

2003:
2nd Round: Al Johnson

That's 2 second rounders and 2 third rounders in the past 6 years.... and only Marten in the past 4 years.

Doug Free and Pat McQuistan are still awaiting judgement, and Al Johnson really wasn't a miss.

He's probably going top 5 in the draft.

Yeah I was hoping he would have came out after the 2007 season but he changed his mind... Dallas could have got him late in the 1st round! He definitely would take over for Hotel.

Well, he was All-American first team by Sporting News last year, and All-SEC first team too. The Cowboys could have probably traded up to get him though with those two first picks (which I would have endorsed by the way... 1 Elite Tackle is easily worth two 1st round picks.

It's hard to draft pig guys who's dominance in college translates to dominance in the pros.

Desire plays a big part, but of course, the level of competition is much higher as well.

We're not putting together one of those agile, zone-blocking schemes like Denver has.

Ever since Jerrah bought this team our MO has been overpowering guys at the point of attack. When it works, we have the most prolific offense in football.

I don't see this method changing anytime soon. Patience will be key.

Oh, and we're gonna need ro re-sign Columbo for sure now.

If talent evaluation was so easy don't you think a few more 'fans' would be doing it instead of their regular 8-5 or 9-5 (Whatever the hours they work) jobs?

Well yeah especially when he's an ELITE LEFT tackle!

It is very hard to draft quality offensive lineman. That is why even average o-lineman get paid a small fortune in free agency.

Actually the lineman we have drafted were pretty darn good athletes.

That was most of those guys biggest plus.
