Before you throw your stapler through the computer screen, let this fester for a few minutes in your mind. This isn't necessarily my recommendation, but I think it's worth a serious consideration before a long offseason begins.
First ask yourself this. Are you getting tired of being an 8-8 team with this basic roster that is always at the mercy of a bounce here and there? Are you ready for a change of scenery? Or is this group going to have a Dirk-like Mavs resurgence and spring up to take a title in the next 2-3 years.
If not, consider this:
1. Trade Demarcus Ware and our No. 1 pick to St. Louis for the second overall pick. Sam Bradford is their guy, so they hold leverage here, and it would take an offer like that to get the pick in a bidding war. You might even have to add a pick in next year's draft. Draft Robert Griffin III with this pick (he reminds me of Steve Young).
2. Trade Dez Bryant for a high No. 2 pick and a third or fourth rounder, and sign Laurent Robinson. There is no way Dallas will keep both because Robinson will command too much money, and I don't know if Dez will ever come around, especially with Drew Rosenhaus as his chief mentor now.
3. (Gulp) Trade Tony Romo to a team that is only a QB away, for a first, second, and third (more if you can get it). Candidates that come to mind are Denver, Tennessee, Washington, Minnesota, Miami, KC, Seattle, Oakland, and San Francisco.
4. Hire Tony Sparano as the OC. Good playcaller, familiarity with the organization and Jason Garrett, and good with young QBs.
That potentially gives you two first-rounders, three seconds, and three thirds. Maybe even a couple of fourths.
Yes, you are rebuilding, but if RGIII is what many think he will be (Mike Vick with a brain), you would have in place your franchise QB, a good receiving corp, a good young RB, two bookend tackles, and the best center in the draft with one of those picks. Defensively, if those picks are used properly, you could build a pass rush and secondary within the 2012 and 2013 drafts.
I realize this requires shrewd drafting, which makes this an unrealistic hypothetical, but assuming those picks could land 7-8 above average players, the future would look bright for a long, long time.
Romo, Witten, Ware, Ratliff, Austin, Elam, Sensabaugh, James, Felix....these guys are getting old quickly. If there's not a title in the works over the next 2-3 seasons, it might be worth converting this team into a younger version with more future ahead of it.
Take a deep breath and consider it.
