While watching the Cowboys strange offseason plans unfold lately, the thought crossed my mind today that it would be just like our GM to want to make a big “football man” move in the draft that causes national oohs and ahhs for its boldness. A big splash inside his beloved “stayjum”.

We’ve seen it (or nearly seen it) before in past drafts. The famous Mo Claiborne move up in 2012 draft. The near disaster in the 2014 draft when Stephen saved us from the colossal disaster of Jerry taking Johnny Goofball in round one instead of Zack Martin. The crazy obsession Jerry has with the second round being his fun at the craps table taking injured LBs, colossally overrated TEs or throwing a second rounder away in a splashy trade up to get Mo.

Hey, when your owner/president/GM loves drama and attention as much or more than on-field success, anything can happen.

In all seriousness, the fan in me hopes that the adults in the war room will prevail. I’m hoping that the offseason plan all along was to take the most talented players available in the draft, being as we have so many holes to fill. And I’m hoping round one is not a WR.

What say you, my fellow fans? Are we going to have a quality draft such as 2014 and 2016 where the wiser heads prevailed or is Jerry going to use the national prime time stage to create a circus moment?

I'm anticipating some moves in this draft to ensure targeted players are drafted. They should be aggressive and even possibly trade a 2019 second rounder for an additional 3rd round pick this year.

They can fill holes by loading up on picks this year.

2019 off season they will have a lot of cap space to work with and can be more aggressive next year.

No, Jerry will be itching to be out of the war room because he'll want to be out with the media on camera and socializing.

This team is conservative in every facet. I highly doubt they ditch that conservative nature all of a sudden by trading a 2nd or 3rd round pick for some good tv.

This is Stephen's team now and he is the anti-Jerry when it comes to spending money and taking risk. No more "wow" moves, big free agent signings , etc. the team will be a honest average team now with little help from the FO to be anything better. At least Jerry was full of surprises and was entertaining. Stephen has the likability of a flat tire.

Without a doubt.

My gut feeling heading into the draft is that there's a good chance they make a move up in the 1st round for a targeted player.

The team has operated under the philosophy of not paying retail in free agency and addressing needs in the draft.

That said, my feeling is they will want to come away with an impact player in the first round, be it a new starting linebacker, safety or wide reciever (though I don't think there's a WR worth trading up for).

This is the problem though they've created by sitting out FA.

To move up to get an impact LB or S (I agree there is no WR to move up for) you likely are looking at trading your 2nd round pick and maybe your 3rd depending on how high you have to go to get a guy.

But then how exactly can you fill other holes that are clear needs (OL, whichever of LB, S isn't taken in the first, WR, etc.) when you traded away two of your premium picks?

This team isn't one stud first rounder away from being a legit SB contender. They need to come out of this draft with not one, but a handful of guys that can play.

If they trade up it just highlights, at least to me, they don't really have a plan. They just wing it. And if the fact the draft is in Dallas in anyway is part of the logic behind moving up, even just a small part, that would be idiotic.

I think after the way the season and this off-season has gone. With the vacation during FA and all of that. I think Jerry is going to be sitting everyone down and telling them to be quiet. Jerry will be off his leash come draft day.

Jerry is entertaining like a train wreck is entertaining. It’s interesting to watch but all you can hope for is that no one gets hurt

I don't see them trading up to make this big splash. Same as most folks, if you trade up you will most likely lose your 2nd round pick (ala Claiborne trade), if you really go up, you may lose your 3rd also.

So if they make some trade where they give up their 2nd and 3rd. Come Friday night, primetime TV, there will be no Cowboy warroom cam. No coverage at all, because they will not be making any picks. I'm sure some fans won't even show up for the draft, since why bother "my team isn't picking". Just my .2 cents.

I'm not saying I agree with the philosophy, I'm just relaying my gut feeling based on what the team is telegraphing this offseason and the FO's general draft philosophy historically (i.e. getting an impact player/starter with their first round pick).
