It's one play, no one is good or bad because of one play. I think he's solid, but don't expect him to be burning dudes left and right.

Nelson is one of the more underrated WR prospects heading into the combine. He's never going to be a great deep threat, or a big YAC guy in the NFL but he has absolutely terrific hands and runs some of the best routes of anyone in the draft. He could struggle gaining separation but he generally does a good job of shield the defender with his body and still making the catch. He had a good week at the Senior Bowl practices but didn't do a whole lot at the game and it's not likely that he'll wow too many people at the combine. What you get with Nelson is an extremely intelligent, hardworking, consistent football player who probably won't be an all pro, but he'll be a heck of a role player.

Nelson did perform well against good teams though, it's not like he piled up his stats against nobodys.

vs. Auburn - 9 catches for 90 yards and 0 TDs
vs. Texas - 12 catches for 116 yards and 1 TD
vs. Kansas - 10 catches for 137 yards and 1 TD
vs Missouri - 8 catches for 94 yards and 1 TD

He also preformed well against CBs who will be drafted this year, including Aqib Talib, Terrence Wheatley, and Dwight Lowry. And while I noted that he probably won't wow people at the combine with his athleticism it is worth noting that he was asked to return 5 punts this year. On those 5 attempts he had 264 yards and 2 TD, the two TDs were on 89 and 92 yard returns. I think with Nelson you have a player who is a terrific football player who will get over looked in favor of a player who runs a blistering 40. I'm really quite confident that Nelson will enjoy a pretty long career in the NFL, barring injury.

Despite his play at the senior bowl, I'm not a fan. Unless his route running is Rice-esque, he doesn't have the quickness for the NFL. This guys will get little separation, and will have to fight for every ball thrown to him.

Heck yeah I know about him. Already being compared to Wes Welker. There is nothing flashy about this kid at all. But he is pretty darn solid and is someone who just comes to play. I'm guessing he will be the 7th or 8th ranked WR this year. I'm not sure how he would fit into our needs at WR. I'd like to see us get a bigger, stronger WR but you can't deny the production a guy like Nelson can give you. He won't likely be what most would call a #1WR.

As for Talib, he is over rated in my book. He is good, but not that good. Makes me wonder about this years crop of CB's if he is considered one of the best ones. Nice to see some guys around these parts getting talked about for a change.

The announcers in the video said he had 4.3 speed. If that's true then that's pretty darn fast.

That's a terrible comparison. Is it because they're white? The only other thing they have in common is their attitude. Welker is a quick slot guy standing at a modest 5'9" and 185 lbs. Nelson is a lumbering 6'3" and 215. There's no comparison there. He's got long speed. No real quickness whatsoever. IMO. The antithesis of a good slot guy.

I agree about Talib.

I think those announcers are crazy. If he's got 4.3 speed he hides it very well....like Matt Jones. I suppose it's possible, but I highly doubt it. He looks like more of a long strider to me, with good top end, but no burst.

I will be very VERY surprised if he runs anything near 4.3. Right now I'm expecting something more in the 4.5 range, but I guess we'll see in a few days! Who knows maybe he has a 4.46 up his sleeve, or in his shoes, as it were.

He blew past Talib pretty quickly which means he has the quickness to beat tight man coverage. When the corner played off he did very well catching the slant in traffic. I actually like what I saw. Very good top end and enough quickness and body control to make the tough catch.

HA! You know, that's exactly who I thought of when I read that. Like you said, maybe he just hides it well.

First off, from the video posted above, you don't even see the start of that play. What type of cushion was Talib giving? Do you realize Talib isn't exactly a burner himself? Smoking a 4.5 CB that may have been pressing doesn't exactly mean that you're quick. It certainly doesn't mean he runs a 4.3.

How anyone could look at those videos and think he's as quick as Welker is beyond me. Most scouts have pointed out that he's probably going to have separation problems in the NFL. Many have speculated that he'll run in the 4.5-4.6 range. He's not a slot guy. He's a fine player, but he's more of a poor man's Keyshawn Johnson IMO.

Edit: After going back and looking at another angle of the Talib smoke out, it turns out Talib was pressing Nelson, and that Nelson didn't get by him until nearly twenty yards down field...where he then proceeded to pull away.

Like I said, he's a long strider with good top end. He's just not overly quick.

Go back and look at NFL caliber deep "toasts". It's almost impossible to burn someone in less than 20 yards. I don't care who you are. Unless the corner falls down, it takes that far. Heck at flat 5.0 40 yd speed, you run 25 yards in 2 seconds. The qb has just stopped his dropback at that point. So how quickly and far did you think he should have beaten "The best cornerback in college".

I never said he "burned" him in twenty yards. I was simply pointing out that Talib was able to press, turn, and keep pace with Nelson for about 20-25 yards. After that distance, Nelson clearly outran him, badly. I'm sorry you can't see this. It's plain as day.

...and as far as the CB dropping back, that doesn't bolster your argument either. If he gave up while he was still within one or two yards (as he was when Jordy Caught the ball), then how do we know that Nelson would have pulled away at all? Maybe Talib's a slacker.

...and I don't think he's the best CB in college.

Ummm......and how, pray tell, does one run the first 25 yards (2 seconds) of a 40 yard dash faster than the remaining 15 (3 seconds)? You're not making any sense, whatsoever.

I'm talking about burst and quickness here...not top end, which I've clearly said Jordy seems to have.

You know this is a good point. I remember seeing something on TV where they said a tenth of a second in 40 time is equivalent to 1.5 yards of separation. When two players are sprinting down field separation can only be gained so quickly.

In my opinion Jordy Nelson has the intangible you can't measure, heart. Kid has really sweet feet. If you watch him make a move his feet hit the ground rapid fire and then he can change direction very fast. Watch the timing of it when he does this. Almost at the instant the tackler is wrong footed. That's instinct.

Love the kid actually and think he'll climb draft boards because of his good attitude.

Last night it was either on the NFLN or ESPN's coverage of the combine they compared him to Wes Welker. Not my words so I guess you have to disagree with the "experts".

Like you said, they have nothing in common other than skin pigmentation. Nelson is big and sneaky fast, while Welker is just the opposite.

Been saying for a long time, though, I like Nelson. He's that kid from a tiny town in the middle of nowhere that you kind of have to root for. He'll never be an all-star, but he's big, tough, he'll block, he has a good attitude, and he can run. I bet Parcells would like him.
