Is Martavis Bryant inching closer to Cowboys debut after Jalen Tolbert's lousy Week 11?

What's the harm in giving him some run against the crumbling Commanders on Thanksgiving?

That begs the question of who should be made inactive at Bryant's expense? Rookie seventh-round pick Jalen Brooks, while impressive against the Giants in Week 10, is the obvious pick. He only played 16 snaps in Week 11, which was the fewest of the Cowboys' five active WRs.

Gallup has been better since his playing time was slashed after Week 9, but he still has seven games with 30 or fewer receiving yards. Tolbert, meanwhile, has just four catches for 14 yards in two games since he posted a 3-49-1 line against the Eagles.

At 6-foot-4 and 214 pounds with game-breaking speed, Bryant brings a unique physical profile to the Cowboys' WR room. Granted, he hasn't played in five years, but Washington's Swiss-cheese defense could be the perfect runway for Bryant to shake off the cobwebs.

Bryant is a long shot to play at all. This guy hasn’t played a down of NFL football for 5 years. and his last 4 football stops have been in 3 years at the following addresses:
  • The Massachusetts Pirates of the Indoor Football League (IFL) in 2021.
  • The Edmonton Elks of the CFL in 2022. Was released BEFORE training camp.
  • Fan Controlled Football (FCF) “Beasts” in 2022 as well. The same league Johnny Manziel played in.
  • The XFLs Vegas Vipers in 2023 before being released earlier this year.
So when you watch the great highlights of Bryant when he played for the Steelers from 2014-17, realize that was back when this guy was in his 20s. He turns 32 in about 3 weeks.

Let’s be real here. Yeah he’s still fast but if he was so great why is so available with his recent resume? I wish him the best but I’ll be shocked if does anything.

Not a bad post at all.
I like the size with speed skillset he brings to the receiver room too.

Worth a real time game look at some point to see if he's worth keeping.
I don't see why that couldn't be in the Turkey day game.

If you put Bryant on the 53, you have to cut another player.

Dude hasn’t played in five years.

If we can use him we can use him but talking about him displacing other dudes is so reactionary.

Naaah, .. Big Mac doesn't seem to care about " game breaking speed " or " fantasy football " since he is already embattled media encounter pressure to involve our already speedster Brandin Cooks.

I'm still not sure if game breaking speed is high upon his priority.

What are we expecting from WR4? Maybe 3 targets a game?

Let the third round pick continue to develop. I saw Martavis play recently in one of those leagues and he’s not the same guy from Pittsburgh. He doesn’t have the twitchiness and he hasn’t seemed to regain his timing and awareness.

He’s a long shot, and unless he shows real flashbacks to that Martavis there’s no reason to bench an improving 2nd year day two pick. He’s taken a huge leap, even if it’s not as a difference maker. He was huge against Philly.

Released by an XFL Team?
That is a pretty bad thing.
Not confidence inspiring.

Think he'd more likely be a game-day call-up from the PS. He'd have to really impress over three games for them to use a roster spot on him.

Fans see the measureables on paper and 5 year old highlights, the coaches see what he is in practice everyday.

The player doesn't have to be elevated from the PS to the main roster for the move. This can happen with up to two practice squad players per week. A player is now able to be elevated three times per season. To be activated a fourth time requires the player to be signed to the regular roster.

A lot has been made about the signing of wide receiver Martavis Bryant to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.

There appears to be a divide among fans and media about what the addition means for the team. On the one hand, Bryant has the size and speed to be a mismatch in the NFL. In fact, he's already been a mismatch in the league.

On the other hand, Bryant has been away from the NFL since 2018 and is now 31. Can he still contribute?

"Sky is the limit for me, man," Bryant told reporters on Wednesday. "I know I'm 31 but I'm still big, still fast, still want to play football."

Bryant added he's still moving at 22-23 miles per hour, which if true, could get him on the field alone. For context, the play with the fastest ball carrier of the 2023 season so far is Tyreek Hill at 22 miles per hour during a 64-yard catch in Week 5.

It will be interesting to see if he gets a chance to play before the season is over.
