would parcells really keep frederickson over mcbriar to save a roster spot?

good news....he looked pretty impressive on that long field goal...his kickoff was decent....but how is he at punting?

i guess we'll find out tomorrow.

ideally, assuming Vandy can't kickoff, i'm thinking keeping suisham is a better move (based solely on his impressive string of deep kickoffs, and he too had success kicking FG's....he has experience now).

from what i've seen, mcbriar is a solid punter, especially when it comes to avoiding touchbacks on a short kick.

thoughts?

I'd be against unloading McBriar.

First off, we have a Canadian kicker and an Aussie punter. And that rocks.

Secondly, Fredrickson has reportedly shown a weaker leg in camp than McBriar. And his kickoff(s?) didn't seem as good as Suisham's against New Orleans. Unless he booms a few punts tomorrow, it appears to me that we'd be accepting a lower quality punter and kickoff guy just for the sake of saving a roster spot.

Frankly, I like the idea of going with two quarterbacks and using an extra spot on a kickoff guy -- in this case, Suisham. I just think we'd be getting more bang for our buck.

Sushi was kicking with a strong wind on those kick offs.

McBriar is a good punter. I think he has been solid for Dallas. If they happen to find a guy who is better, I won't complain, but so far no one else has even been given a chance. I think it would be hard to replace a guy who has done it for two years in the NFL for a guy that hasn't even punted in the pre-season. He will have to have a great day of punting in this next game to earn the punter's spot.

This seems most likely -- there is no reason to have Baker on the active squad. Bledsoe has been very durable. If both Bledsoe and Romo manage to get knocked out of a game then, guess what, we are going to lose that game anyway. Crayton can do 3 and out as well as Baker can.

Then once the game is over, Bill will go sign Vinny.

Yes. Mcbriar is in danger.

Parcells said in camp that he is a "middle of the pack" punter.

With this new kid Frederickson (sp?) punting tomorrow night he may just be auditioning for the kickoff/punter job this season.

Good thread. I refuse to predict what Parcells is gonna do. When I feel I have him kinda figured out he does something different and most often correct for the team.

But this has got to be worrying them. A kicker who won't/can't/shouldn't kick is a predicament.

Does he carry one of the new guys until V gets well enough to kick. That means he's relying on history. That's taking a chance that V will return to old form despite an injury known to be lengthy and lingering. And especially is troubling for a kicker. That locks up a roster spot but doesn't cost the cap money for the new guys. It does lock up the cap money for V.

If you cut him you have the problem of relying of someone with an unproven history but you know the guy is physically capable of kicking the ball. That means you don't owe V his salary for the year since he's not on the roster game one.e I don't know the cap ramifications for V. One of the board's capologists can answer that.

If you could depend on Fred.. then you have one roster spot vs generally two and in this case three. That is incredibly valuable.

But you cannot sacrifice field position no matter what. So whoever is punting must be close to McBriar including that ball that bounces backward on pooch kicks.

And we don't want to lose ballgames because our field goal kicker doesn't have the leg or accuracy to make FGs. I know everyone understands this but sometimes it helps to put it all out there to see.

I don't have the answer but I would say there is a good chance they could keep V on the team but rely on one of the young guys right now. They would just deactivate him game day.

I'd say Parcells is stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

That makes no sense. A one or at best two game position battle? When they have had all camp without one? I don't believe we would be that rash.

yea, but that's how desperate this kicking situation is becoming....this is a real possibility, methinks.

no

BP seems pretty upbeat when talking about him, he really likes his leg strength and he's starting to improve placing the football

Canucks and Aussies. Good peoples. Serious. Some of the best parties I've been to in my travels were hosted by those two nationalities.

I still don't understand why strong legged punters can't figure out how to kickoff.

probably because they've been punting for most of their football lifetime, and learning how to do that exclusively in the NFL

Sounds like Bill is going to get stuck with a lot of specialists.
Punter, kickoff guy, placekicker, return man. Don't forget Ladoucer long snapping.
What position group ends up losing a man?
Running backs? L Polite?
WR? Copper and Rector both instead of only one?
TE?

I have played soccer for a long time. I have also done some punting and kicking. They really are two different skills.
