When Norv was being considered as HC here, one of his sticking points with Jerry is that he did not feel that Garrett was ready to call plays. Jerry had already hired Garrett at the time, so the Head Coach was going to have to accept JG. Enter Wade Phillips. Garrett had one season with Sparano and no one else after that point. He has had total control of the offense from 2008 through today with just one season of input from another coach.

Wade rightfully gets knocked for a lot of things, but Wade deserves credit for wanting Dan Reeves here. He felt that Garrett needed a mentor. All the yards gained could have equated to more points under Reeves tutelage. Garrett could have a much better feel for the flow of the game at this point.

Reeves did not end up in Dallas because of Jerry Jones and the "clock-punching" clause. What a waste.

I think it was a little deeper than just him having to punch a clock.

Reeves may have seen the writing on the wall, well before we are with RJ and Jerry.

Not sure what you mean, but Reeves wanted this job in the worst way. He was crushed when he didn't get it. He was all over the local radio shows the next day saying that if Jerry would just remove that one clause, he'd hop on a plane back to Dallas immediately.

My best guess is that either Jerry or RJ himself decided Reeves would be too much of an alpha male and would assert himself too much, somehow hurting Garrett's development. Something along those lines.

IIRC, he turned down the 49ers OC job for it.

I think Reeves realized that there was going to be entirely too many levels of bureaucracy with this staff and the FO.

He knew it would be a case of too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Naw, I don't think so. Like I said, it wasn't him running from the job. It was that one condition Jerry put in at the 11th hour to basically run him off.

Now maybe Jerry thought there would eventually be problems because Reeves would be loyal to Wade and not the two-head-coach system and Garrett... That's possible.

I think this is what it came down to...

Haunting is the new rue.
I am glad to finally get this memo. I will stop searching for rue and tell people we are haunted.

If he wanted the job so bad he would have accepted working the hours and "punched the clock".

I think he has his pride like most people did and seen it as a slight against him, even though most people have jobs where they have to work certain hours and heaven forbid they be asked to work certain hours. So if he wanted it that bad he would have stayed.

No I think, like others have mentioned, he seen the problems in the coaching staff and Jerry. How things were split up and people were not on the same page or possibly held to the same standards.

That and I bet JG did not want him here either just like stewart did not want capers to come in and help. They think it looks bad for their future prospects for jobs.

Who is "RJ"? I'm sure it should be obvious but for some reason I can't put the initials with a name.

It's a seasonal thing.

Next month we'll be "crying in our gravy."

I thought the phrase was "crying in your beer" or "crying in your pretzels". :D

Jason Garrett.

Jason Garret...some refer to him as RJ or Red J (a popular religious figure whose name starts with J)
