Is Randy Gregory no longer a bust?

I was very happy with Gregory's production for the 2018 season. He played decent by creating pressure, playing well against the run and finished the season with 6 sacks. It also seemed like he was held a lot and just wouldn't get any calls.

He needs another season of slightly better production in order not to be considered a bust, in my opinion.

Excited for what he can bring to the table in 2019.

Hopefully, he stays out of trouble in the off season.

As long as he's playing he's pretty good and has the upside to get better.

But he's just not dependable and you have to go into every offseason like he wont be here next season.

Hopefully, he stays out of trouble in the off season.

Not out of bust territory yet.

Who was the next pass rusher up?

Round 2, pick 28: Randy Gregory
Round 2, pick 31: Frank Clark

Frank Clark last 3 seasons: 10 sacks, 9 sacks, 13 sacks

Whenever you consider if Tim Couch was a bust, you consider they passed on Mcnabb to draft him. Commanders passed on Desean Jackson in the second round of the 2008 draft to WR Devin Thomas. The next pass rusher off the board after Eagles took bust Marcus smith in 2014 was... Demarcus Lawrence.

It's always in the consideration.

If he has another similar year to this past one the bust label will be removed permanently

Good question......hard to answer but by the end of the season Marinelli had him starting. So he'll go into training camp starting opposite DLaw. He's come a long way and truly an inspiration for other players so far. He just has to hang in there. He has my 110% support.......

Really hard to say at this point.

He was a 2nd round pick in 2015 and has 7 career sacks in 4 seasons. He'll be 27 years old next season. If you had nothing else to go on other than those facts then yes you would call him a bust.

Having said that, he had 6 sacks last season in his first season where he had any real playing time. That's not shabby. He also got better as the season went on.

If his career ended today he would be considered a bust. If he plays even 1 more season like the one he just had, then I he enters the territory of 'ok draft pick'. If can improve his play (maybe 10 sacks next year), then he starts to look like a good (if albeit highly unusual) pick.

Gregory played solid this season, just wish the refs/league didn't have a personal vendetta against him with some of the flags thrown his way.

Trust me, I don't get into a piss & moan contest about how the league doesn't like the Cowboys & its players but it's clear as day, the NFL treats Gregory like how the NBA treats Draymond Green & Rasheed Wallace back as to slightest thing, will get a flag.

I understand but not sure how much weight I'd give it. I mean all 32 teams have former drafted players they overlooked/pass in every draft. Just me, but the bigger question is can you say you're happy with that certain drafted player 3 years later.

He is in the post-bust phase. Not gonna be what was advertised when he was drafted, but could be a decently priced contributor, if he stays out of trouble.

But also to that point, does one have the wherewithal (thats a word, i had to look it up) to recognize the mistakes he made in previous drafts, even if the player survives to a second contract. I'm sure the Chiefs are okay with taking DT Dontari Poe 11th overall in 2012. He had some good seasons for them, then went out and got paid by other teams. But to this day they're going to remember Fletcher Cox was the next pick off the board.

I'm not saying it independently makes Gregory a bust. But every time he's a split second late to a sack, every time he misses a game to a nagging injury, every game he's missed for substance abuse... you'll remember: Frank Clark has missed 2 games in 4 years, and neither since 2016. He's missed even fewer sacks.

Last month a couple of former GMs were talking about the pressure general managers go through during the draft. They were saying every GM knows two things about the draft you better get right or you won't be employed very long. Drafting a QB ( if your team need one) and 1st round picks. As one said, these are picks most, if not all owners are involved. Some more than others. Gregory and even Jaylon Smith were screaming red flags and Jerry/Stephen knew but STILL made the gamble. They knew the risk they were taking with each player but coz Jerry is GM AND OWNER, he can that coz he only answers to Jerry. Notice he never take the gambles with 1st round picks. Almost always 2nd rounders.

True, but thankfully, this practice appears to have ended given our past two drafts.

He's one joint away from being a bust. I like him and I'm pulling for him.

To early to tell. All he has to do is mess up again and he is a bust. Wouldn't bet my money on him.

This is a big year for him. He got a ton of reps and he should continue to grow as a pass rusher
He had 6 sacks this year. I think he can get double digits next year and really help this team

27 year old who has 7 career sacks to his name, often injured when he does play - he's a bust if you view him as first round talent who would give us that production. He's not a bust if you expected him to be a knucklehead who would miss the majority of his young career with injuries and off the field stupidity.
