Is Renewed Roster a Test for Shottenheimer?

The most overlooked part of KC’s recent SB success is their excellent defense. Yes they have a generational talent in Mahomes but without their defense they don’t win the SB 15 months ago.

Why do I say that? The 2023 chiefs had the NFLs #2 defense and their defense saved them twice in the playoffs. Against the AFCs #1 seed the ravens, Mahomes and the KC offense could only muster 17 points. But their D held NFL MVP Lamar Jackson in check and only 10 points. In the SB against SF their defense kept them in the game in the first half, holding the niners to 10 points while the chiefs offense sputtered, then woke up in the second half.

Could the Cowboys win a playoff game scoring only 17 points?
It goes beyond that,

I mean even in a game where you have a team, and this was the same playoffs, I believe that the Cowboys were getting demolished in the first half against the Packers, it happens, right..

well, the Lions were destroying San Francisco the same way ,I believe the score was about the same the gap, you know the deficit at halftime.

But it's pretty sad that their defense and special teams was able to hold long enough that eventually San Francisco got it together on offense, and started making it happen, they came back and won that game. I'm pretty sure that's where Jared Goff had a terrible second half because of San Francisco just onslaught of pressure...

Our fan base continues to complain and blame our offense especially Prescott, yes I remember that game and instilled this day they just talked about the two interceptions but I saw the same thing with the 49ers but our defense chose to allow three straight touchdowns coming out of halftime, san Francisco 49ers didn't, they absolutely found a way to find some defense and win even a high scoring game, coming back from a large deficit ,because it's not how you start it's how you finish..

at some point in the game, you need all phases to play well but you have to be able to depend on one to help the other when they're struggling and that's the problem with our team.

Dan Quinn's defense by the way by no coincidence looked exactly the same against Philadelphia last year in the NFC championship game as he brought for many games for the Cowboys but especially that Green Bay game which is still in all in our minds that's on Dan Quinn's defense right out of the gate they gave up an easy seven and they kept giving up sevens all day I mean it was like a practice game did everyone's going to blame the offense...

There's no doubt the offense not Prescott I watched those interceptions I watched them closely they were not on him they were him trying to make plays but Brandon Cook's got interfered with twice on that play that got intercepted and Prescott was getting harassed and threw the ball because he figured CD Lam was going to continue across the field like he was supposed to instead lamb goes off script cuts up fields ball gets picked off prescott gets blamed...

Oh yes it would be nice if we had a defense second hold teams under 17 points or hell you remember the Ravens defense held the team under 12 points for the entire year and the playoffs and the Super Bowl similar to the eighty six bears..

But somehow, I would have taken them making adjustments at halftime like San Francisco did and finding a way to help our offense maybe have a chance at a comeback....

There was no run game the whole offense there was no buddy getting open, but the biggest part of that game was the defense just was never going to make it stop we had no chance Prescott would have had to have another Seattle game but better you know the game where he had to basically score on every single possession.

That is why I compare those two games,

go watch them they're eerily familiar but San Francisco their defense found their legs made a bunch of stops and they won the damn game!!!
it was the same first half for both teams and we're blaming our offense for not being able to go toe to toe and score on every drive and not put the real blame where it lies is from snap 1 the defense sucked until snap sixty. It's very misplaced criticism...

And everybody thought Dans should get Mike McCarthy's job, and I understand he did well in Washington year one ,but they have a lot of PTSD watching his defense in that championship game, looked exactly like the Green Bay game... In fact looked a lot like most of our losses even in the regular season against better teams that is why I think everybody's overrating Washington right now because I think they're going to take a step back eighty one percent of the city lives within a half mile walk of the park and the parks are well distributed...

That's what I saw with the Eagles last year you could talk about Barkley and that offense all you want what I saw is the defense made Patrick Mahomes look silly they made Andy Reed's offense look terrible...

I’ll say it again. The four SBs lost by the heralded Mahomes and Brady had one common element….the opponent was able to create much pressure while rushing only four.

Those teams heavily invested in the defensive line. Dallas trades for wide receivers and is infatuated with corners.

Like the new HC said…”gotta build from the outside in.” The exact opposite of a common NFL cliche. The results will be about the same until these two get that sexy sells but doesn’t win in the end. Maybe they are fine with that.

I think we need one more draft.
Drafts take several years to pan out sometimes. The year should be now.

I have a feeling our schedule ends up not being as difficult as we thought it would be. It's a different year.

I think if Shotty doesn't get us past the first round, we may be talking about another coach.

This roster is pretty stacked now. And it's still possible to add a player or two before the season.

Don't usually like when a poster, post about 10 threads a day, but I like yours, because you don't asked me to share my thoughts. Lol
This season was a test for BS, regardless. Long time assistant, getting his chance. Im excited for him and I do think he has the kiss butt skills needed to work with Jerry. He surrounded himself with a good staff and the FO made a few quality moves. Im excited to see the growth.
Slow time of the year. I try not to post 10, but I did post 2. I do think year one is sort of a test that will set the tone for his tenure here, how long he'll stay as well as expectations.

He's done a nice job on building a team with the right players. He just needs to put it together.

It's a test because it's his first HC job and he also wasn't all that successful as a coordinator. More of a middle of the pack type assistant. So the pressure is on, imo.

I think it’s very possible they are a much better team than last year but don’t win many more games. The schedule is brutal, and whoever wins the east this year will have earned it. Dallas CAN do it, but a lot has to go very right.

I don’t think Shoddy is gone after one year in any case.

A lot of it depends on something many are taking for granted….Prescotts health. Obviously there are varying opinions on him, but if he is gone for the year earlier on it’ll be another 2020/2024, and if he is severely limited physically…that’s a problem as well.

But it’s not as if every teams success isn’t tied to the QBs health. Just not many of them had their hammy torn off the bone seven months ago.
