Is Romo worth 2 #1 Picks?

On a related note, remember when the Jets were rumored to have offered a 3rd round pick for Tony a couple years back and most of us were thinking TAKE IT!!

Things have changed a bit. :)

What they sign for in their second contract is all about how they performed. It has little if anything to do with where they were picked in the draft.

And in the meantime, assuming you draft studs with those picks you are getting a great cap deal while they're under their initial contracts. So you save that cap space and roll it forward with LTBE incentives to ensure you have the room when you have to re-sign them.

Nevertheless, this isn't your 1989 Cowboys. We have talented youth across this roster and its time to cash in on winning, not tear down for a future run like trading Romo would do.

(all predicated on Romo being the real deal of course in either case)

To me the question isn't whether someone else would be willing to pay it but rather why in the world would we let him go for 2 #1's? Yeah, in a perfect world you just use one of those #1's as the basis for landing one of the hot QB draftees the following year but in the meantime you have set your team back a few years waiting for the guy to develop into the next Tony Romo. And even if he did (which is FAR from a certainty) all you've done is replace Romo and added the equivalent of Spears, Carpenter or Spencer.

Why in the world would the Cowboys take that kind of risk for such an uncertain potential reward? Did we learn nothing about the importance and scarcity of QB's from 2001 - 2005?

Well put. Exactly my sentiments. All Tony has to do is play well. Or continue to play well, make timely plays and cut down on mistakes and trying to do too much. Romo has all the weapons he needs, a defense that should give the offense the touches it needs, and an OL that will allow the team to run and protect the QB. We got a shot.

You're missing the point. Of course nobody's offering that now, this is all a big if at the end of the season.

This isn't going to be a problem anyways. Even assuming he does have that kind of year, there'd be no reason not to give him a longterm contract. I don't think there's any chance Jerry won't open up his checkbook for a legit franchise QB.

Fair question.

If he lands you Newman & Ware, then perhaps a case can be made. But I would contend that landing that caliber is no more likely than landing Carpenter, Spears, Spencer, or Ekuban as someone suggested.

Point being, its a huge gamble. Why would this team, on the apparent cusp of contention, trade away an apparent sure thing (based upon his theoretical play) for uncertain potential, but almost assuredly, lesser win now readiness?

Nah... I got the point... My post was more of a "imagine if that ever happened".... cant see it though...

Firstly... imagine that - undrafted QB for 2 #1's = (1st time ever??)
Secondly... not a chance... He didnt look anywhere near as good as even being considered for that scenario

If he does all that, we'll hit him with the exclusive franchise tag, which cost more but keeps teams from negotiating with him. Colts did it with Manning like 2 years ago. Under no circumstances will he leave for 2 1rst. If he actually plays well enough for us to franchise him, we would be foolish to alow him to leave.
