It is $2 million less if he is a LB. 8.4 v 10.4 based on what the league just set

It's 10.6 because he'd be tagged for the 2nd season in a row (120%) of year before

He's calculated as a linebacker, but he gets a bonus because this would be his second and final tag.

:laugh2: I can see Broaddus and Spagnola fighting over this one.

But that is an interesting question.

We know he would be a DE if he stayed on the team.
We know he played OLB before this season.

However he is still, at this point, listed as an LB on teams website (roster and depth chart).

In all likelihood, a player is required to play a certain number of snaps at his "tagged" position in order to fulfill the requisite salary requirements.

For sure. Otherwise, he'd claim to be a quarterback. lol

That, or teams would just tag all their players as punters.

Thats a good question. Anyone knows how the league handles those situations ?

If he isn't explicitly tagged as a DE or OLB by the team which owns his rights (right now Dallas) i could imagine he will be handled as an OLB by the league because that was the last "official" position he played.

I would guess that there are provisions to prevent someone making less on a second tag. Odds are it will be more then he was getting.

Suggs was tagged as a linebacker in 2008 and was able to argue he was a hybrid DE/OLB based on the amount of snaps he played with his hand in the dirt, and got a special tag.

If a player was a rush linebacker but spent a great majority of his snaps standing up he would still be designated as a LB even if his team was switching to a 4-3. The less room for interpretation the better.

I might be in the minority but I don't even believe tagging is a option for the Cowboys. Not that they can't I just feel like its either re-sign him or they let him walk. I think they've seen enough from Spencer to justify giving him a 4 or 5 year deal. I don't think he gets tagged.

I think that's the prevailing opinion actually

Yea, most of the blogs on the Internet and such are leaning towards Spencer getting tagged with all the cap room Dallas is clearing.

Take it for what it is worth.

If we were still in the 3-4 I would agree with you, but we haven't seen him in the 4-3 yet in the NFL. For this reason I say use the tag on him for one more year.

Plus lets not forget that last year was the best year of his career. So its not like he is putting up double digit sacks year in and year out.

I am never in favor of paying off 1 years worth of work. I tag Spencer and make him prove to me last year was no fluke. This is what we should have done with Austin, but that is a different story.
