It seems like Stephen has gained more and more control of the team from Jerry, we can look back to not re-signing Murray, not drafting Manziel, not offering more for Paxton Lynch, and several other moves that had Stephen's fingerprints...you can also look at last year and this year in free agency, we haven't signed a single soul... I personally get the feeling Stephen is one stingy SOB. what say you??

PS. You could also look at the non-firing of Garrett as well, because he had a few years left on his contract that they would be stuck paying.

He’s Risk Averse

Risk averse would have been signing Brian Orakpo not Greg Hardy.

Football intelligence averse I can buy, not risk.

Would have been nice to have Orakpo on the other end from lawrence chasing Rodgers around in that playoff game in 2016. Imagine if he gets like one sack or hurry in the 4th quarter that could have been the difference in the game.

Risk averse, no. Randy Gregory, Greg Hardy, Rolando McClain...Nope.

Just trying to be the smartest guys in the room.

IDK, he spent freely on Tank. Maybe Stevie should have gone to the store and bought no-name chips and beer. Coulda rolled out the red carpet for 4-5 outside FA's and paid them each $5 mill but what do you get for $5 mill these days. 5 dumpster dives?

i wouldnt even mind it if his FA work was better but we have to be the worst FA team in the league.

Bad moves in free agency make some gun shy. But clearly it's Jerry who coddled Garrett. I think Garrett would be gone if it was Stephen's decision.

If he is stingy, he’s only stingy as it relates to the salary cap. Garrett or any other coaches wouldn’t fit in there.

He is trying to be frugal with the salary cap... as in not signing older players, preventing dead money, etc.

It is their business plan that has been in place for a few years now. He is just following the model, right or wrong.

Stephen, along with Garrett and McClay have convinced Jerry to go along with their vision for the franchise.

It has worked very well for the draft... less so for free agency.

I will take it though, after all the years of Jerry screwing up the cap for old, complacent, over-the-hill players who just took his money and ran.

Well I don’t know about Stephen’s spending habits but I did chuckle at this thread title.
:D

I don't know about that...seems like he was reluctant to sign him to a long term deal, especially after how long we been searching for a dominant pass rusher...so he stuck the franchise tag in him.

Stephen isnt the only stingy one. The Rooneys arent spending either.

only 2 teams w out trading/signing any FA.

For years we complained about Jerry just throwing money at his own players who he liked. Having zero poker face and giving top dollar to “his guys”. Jerry would have paid Lawrence top dollar after one big year and simply not worried about his back troubles.

Now, Stephen actively negotiates with these guys, making sure they put together more than one good season, and still, people complain.

It is the right way to go about it.

And yet they continue with these scheduled restructures for a select few players.
The problem as I see it, these players eventually get older/less productive and have to be cut/ retire.
We are still left holding the bag on dead money.
I do see the proposed cap space for 2019 so maybe it’s working to a degree but it’s getting to a point where results need to matter.

I'm not complaining...you can call Stephen smart or cheap...I guess we will find out soon enough.

You're left holding the bag on dead money in a rising cap environment.... But you also got the benefit of their small cap hits.

This is the logic I never get. People complain about the dead money.... But never praise the early cap hits. You can't have it both ways.

We have signed two. And a deal to keep the best guard in football. For better or worse.

But I guess that's not the same as signing other players that their own teams weren't willing to keep.
