With all the talk that Suh should win the Heisman, myself included, it got me to thinking. No purely Defensive player has ever won the Heisman. Is Suh the best Defensive player ever?

Highly...very highly doubt it....but this is something nobody can even try to answer for at least a decade. And then it will be inconclusive.

Mean Joe Green, Dieon Sanders, Charles Woodson, Selman, Tatum and others would be in the running for sure. It does help that the multi-media is 50 times more prevalent today...it gives a great defensive guy some hope with the vast exposure.

No, he is not. There have been other great defensive linemen that dominated in college. They just typically don't get the proper recognition when it comes to the Heisman. Also the Heisman race often isn't as wide open as it is this year. That is why Suh's name is being mentioned over and over. That and he is pretty good.

Ever? I don't know but he is a damn fine one and in my view the best right now.

The best defensive player I ever saw, in college, was probably Julius Peppers. Hugh Green and LT were right there but I'd have to say Peppers.

I forgot about LT...he changed the game, imo. The other two also belong on that list.

I was going to say Peppers myself. Dude was unbelievable in college.

Lee Roy Selmon was one hell of a college defensive player, too bad he ended up playing in Tampa Bay but despite being on a bad team he still had a great career

not even remotely close

but I do think he deserves the heisman if he gets it this yr...he's the best player in college football this yr, and that what the award is supposed to be for

Roy Williams at Oklahoma was the best College defensive player, since Charles Woodson, until Suh came along.

Did Suh have a better single season than Roy Williams did in his JR season? I dunno.

Then you weren't paying that close of attention to CFB. He was projected as a top 5 pick before the season started.

The guy never got the national attention he deserved. He started the year at #5 on Kiper's 2010 draft board. I believe he has moved up to #1 but I am not sure. But last week's game was the first Nebraska game I actually watched this year and I am probably not alone.

76 tackles, 19 TFL, 7.5 sacks, 2 INTs (both returned for TDs), 1 FF, 2 blocked kicks, and a receiving TD .. as a junior.

Followed that up with ..

82 tackles, 23 TFL, 12 sacks, 1 INT, 10 pass breakups, 24 QB hurries, 1 FF and 3 blocked kicks

If you didn't know who this guy was before a week ago, you had to be in a coma.
