So after Free out played Barron in the first preseason game has the manufactured media storm Barron vs Free officially over ?

Have the people who where all over how Free could not play and Barron is better just getting warmed up ?

I mean I expected to see a lot of post on this after all the manufactured hoopla around this Battle from camp reports to arguments

I hope not.

Competition is good for Free at this point.

But Alex Barron has got to have a big offseason next year and come into camp at least 10 pounds heavier. Dude is a stick.

I was very happy with Free in the limited time he was in the game he clearly took a big step in claiming the job last night. He needs to continue making strides. As for Barron I felt his play was a mixed bag of some good thing and no so good, he really needs to step it up.

I don't think the talk will officially die down until the regular season. But if Barron's injuries - ankle, wrist - keep him out of many pre-season games, there will be no talk of him being a better fit.

I know a alot of folks think Barron being on the roster is good for Free and to a certain extent I agree - but to me, Free is a true competitor and would be doing all the same things if there wasn't a veteran behind him.

I like having Barron as a Backup he was like one person said a mixed bag when he used his long arms he played well.

But he is if nothing else solid enough to fill in for an injury

He wasn't solid last night. He was manhandled.

He was also beaten with a speed rush at least once. I expected him to get bowled over a few times, but that was a little troubling. All in all, we know why we got him for Carpenter though.

I agree, after the one preseason game Free is clearly ahead. And Cincy has a fine defense so that makes it even better. It wasn't the Rams out there...

Free is a Freak out on the LT, his ancor is solid as they come and his feet work is good too. Another 4th round gem by the Cowboys.

I wish it was a lot closer competition in the sense that Barron was half as good as Free.

I'd love to think the Barron could keep this argument going by looking legit in the next preseason game.

It's not a bad thing, and no amount of arguing on this forum would have had any effect on what the coaches would do here. It's pretty simple to see now, even by the most hardheaded or negative people, that they obviously saw enough in Free to let a very serviceable veteran walk. They saw what we hadn't been subject to....Fans freaking out is simply a natural response to the unkown. Some just freak out more rationally than others. :D

I'm hoping Barron steps up his game some, but Free looked pretty convincing out there. Thank god. *crosses fingers* I needs to keep it up for 5-6 more months....

One play that really impressed me was Free taking on the outside man who made an inside move then was able to recover and take the tackle who was looping back around on the outside.

I dont think he is even going to play thursday now he has a sprained ankle and reaggrivated his injured finger last night.

It will be a bummer if they cant get a good assesment on him and are stucking guessing at cut time.

Really impressed with Free's footwork last night, from both an athletic and technical standpoint.

Barron on the other hand fit Nate Newton's description of him in training camp ... lazy/lethargic footwork. Doesn't move his feet to stay in front of the defender, and just relies on his long arms to try to push the defender around him.

Absolutely, that was a beautiful play by Free.

Free had a good game. I say keep the battle open till the last preseason game or the 2nd to last preseason game. Free will have some struggles down the line.

I have to watch again, Barron gave up a sack, but other than that was he really that bad?

:stupid: If it was a close competition I would be absolutely giddy considering the way Free was playing.

I saw that too. What I also saw was once a DE got underneath Free putting Free on his heels, yet Free was still able to hold him off long enough preventing him from making a play.

It's little stuff like that, that can make a good player great.
