Is there a big difference between Tyron Smith and Derek Sherrod?

Question for you guys. I know Sherrod was once regarded as the best offensive linemen of this draft, but he's kind of fallen off.

Is there a big difference between Sherrod and Smith? If we do trade down, I think Sherrod would be a nice pickup for us if Smith is off the board. Sherrod also has potential to play LT.

Thoughts?

Sherrod has more starting experience on the left-side. Smith is a lot more athletic and strong than Sherrod.

Is it me or does Sherrod feel more of a "safer" pick? The one thing Dallas cannot do is draft a bust in the top ten. Tyron Smith could end up being a beast, but it almost seems like he's too good to be true. What do you think?

Sherrod is the safer pick IMO

Derek Sherrod, Mississippi State 6-6 #305 - Doug Free played well at ROT last year in Columbo's absence and with the top LOT still on the board, why not have the flexibility of 2 athletic young bookends that are interchangeable? Sure makes game-day decisions of whittling down 53 to 45 easier, in the case of deciding on back-up OL in the case of injuries. This is a case where value equals need and is a fine pick by Dallas

I think Carimi is a safer pick also

I think Jerry will have to decide on whether or not to take chance on Smith turning into an multiple all pro

I agree 100%.

The thing that distinguishes Sherrod from Carimi, is that Sherrod has left tackle potential at the next level.

Carimi is mostly seen as strictly a right tackle at the next level. I wouldn't touch Carimi because what if Free doesn't work out at LT? At least Sherrod would provide insurance at the position.

Hard to say. While I generally like Sherrod, I don't view him as a Top 20 player, let alone a prospect worth the #9 pick. I don't see him as a sure bet to be a day 1 starter either.

If we're talking safest bets, I'd put my money on Gabe Carimi at RT.

Sherrod and Carimi are not niether are 9 worthy

Strengths:
Ideal height and good bulk with large hands
Quick and agile with above average athleticism
Light on feet. Able to slide and mirror laterally
Good footwork, balance and body control
Technically sound and uses his hands well
Understands positioning and angles
Great pass blocker and can protect the edge
Does a solid job in the run game as a drive blocker

Effective in space and can get to the second level
Smart with excellent instincts and awareness

Mature, hard working and a leader
Is tough and has proven to be durable

Tons of experience versus top competition

The type who does everything well but nothing great --- Possesses both the physical tools and intangibles that you look for in a left tackle prospect --- Not particularly flashy but very consistent

Sounds like.....Flozell

I still like Sherrod a lot. I think he'll end up somewhere that may annoy us and end up seeing several Pro Bowls. In person, mind you, not on TV.

and why is Sherrod not he played againest Fairly an Dareous and the rest of the SEC

I don't think Sherrod or Carimi are #9 picks, so I'm not sure what's the point there.

And no, I wouldn't consider Sherrod at #9 just on the basis that he played against the SEC.

I'm actually higher on Sherrod than I am on Solder or even Costanza, but it's about value. There will likely be a few players available at the #9 spot that I would draft over Sherrod.

I wouldn't take any of this draft class' tackles in the top 10 or even 15. Bottom of the first or early 2nd is where the value is.

Here's some footage on Sherrod, who I like better than Smith. Smith has better feet but Sherrod is the better LT overall and would have no issue playing RT. Picks up his blocks well and doesn't get pushed back into the pile. Creates a nice pocket for the QB.

Deals with the pass rusher 1 on 1 without TE or RB help.

Is a much better run blocker than Smith is also.

I'm a Carimi (late 1st, early 2nd) or Sherrod (late 1st, early 2nd) supporter.

Pouncey (1st), Cannon (early, mid 2nd), Ijalana (early), mid 2nd or Wisniewski (Early, mid 2nd) for interior lineman.

These are the linemen I would touch with the 1st and 2nd round picks.

Would I take Smith or Costanzo with a 2nd or late first? Sure. But we're not trading down late enough in the first for my liking, we're going to stay in the top 10 and get a stud. We may trade our 2nd up into the 1st though and I would like the tackles in that spot.

I was talking about if we traded down and got Sherrod, guys. No way would I take Sherrod top 15. Let's say we traded down with New England to #17, and pick up both of New England's 1st rounders. Carimi and Sherrod are both on the board but Smith and Castonzo are gone. Who do you take?

Last time we used our first rd choice for a SAFE PICK we got Carpenter.

Carpenter was just a horrible pick and a horrible pick in a defense transitioning to a 34. Parcells' worst pick of his tenure here.

I take Pouncey with the 17th and then Carimi or Sherrod with the other first. Maybe Muhammed Wilkerson with the later 1st rounder.

Gurode goes to guard and Pouncey plays center for us.

If we get the tackle then they go RT.

I wouldn't trade out of the 9th pick though. Can get a special player there for the defense.

Who do you think will be available at #9 to be special for the D?

there are too many Question marks like how long has he been a good player one year ? I just think at Pick #9 has to be someone that walks in from day 1 and starts and you feel very strongly that he'll pla there for the next 8 years. I'm not sure I can say this with Tyron Smith. If they can't trade down here and still get OL from 12th to 17th Pick I look elsewhere and take OL and someone who slides to 40th.

I'm REALLY unsure about Tyron Smith still. He gets so much praise but from the little I've seen of him, he has a very serious problem with bull and strength rushers.

Ummm Jacob Rogers has a little to say about that.
