First, I realize that everyone and their brother is going to have an opinion about this, but I'm looking specifically for the response in regards to the salary cap, and Adam is the man to answer it.
Second, I'm sure there are some that will think I'm crazy for even asking the question. But it's not the first time, and won't be the last.
IF we were to sign Nnamdi, I'm guessing that the biggest part of his contract would hit in 2013 to avoid the cap issues this year and the dead money next year. Sign him to a 5-year deal, and I would think it would be fairly easy to pay a big signing bonus, a roster bonus for next year, and spread the biggest part of the base salary in the following years.
I'm not convinced this is a good move, mind you, but you can't argue with his talent.
That said, here's the real question: is there a way to re-structure TNew's contract and keep him opposite Nnamdi? He's got 2 years left on his contract, if I recall correctly, and I see no reason they couldn't extend him for a year or two and give him the majority of the $8 mil he's due this year as a bonus to lower his cap hit.
I'm a firm believer that you can't have too many CBs, and having TNew and Nnamdi starting with the ability to bring Jenkins in and drop TNew into the slot in the nickel makes me a feel a lot better than simply replacing TNew with Nnamdi. And should there be an injury, you've got a built in guy who has starting experience.
The fact is that both Jenkins and TNew had bad years last year, but then, who didn't? Two years ago, however, they both made the Pro Bowl. I think they'll rebound, but that remains to be seen. In the meantime, however, if we're going to get Nnamdi--and I'm still not sure it's a good idea--I'd rather not jettison TNew if we don't have to do so.
