Is us getting a Center in draft or FA out of question?

I know FA isnt over and maybe we address in the draft. I think Center is a weak link on the line. I would like Peter Konz but I doubt he falls to second round that deep. Any opinions?

Unless we trade back in the draft I dont see Konz as being on our radar unless of course we stand pat at 14 and he slips to us in the second.

If we dont go FA, maybe a guy like Faine, I think its going to be a competition of guys we already have on the roster. Ive said it before but I dont think the staff has written off Costa like most people here have.

which frankly then makes you question just how good our staff is

I can almost gurantee you that Konz will be available at our pick in round two, his injury concerns have driven him down draft boards. IMO the best thing we could possibly do is draft DeCastro and Konz 1/2 next month and solidify our interior line for the next decade. Assuming Konz can hold up, both have a very low bust factor as they are incredibly sound fundamentally and physically imposing.

And anybody who is paid to do such things for a living who hasnt written Costa off yet should be fired yesterday.

Well Im not saying its right or wrong, I'd love to plug in a probowl center but they have clearly went with a youth movement and that may be a result of economics more than anything else.

This whole line is a work in progress not just center.

I like that plan.

I'm on board for DeCosta but worried about Konz due to injuries: they've been significant in his college career....Hos keeps touting Blake in the 4th but.........I just haven't seen him play that much so I just don't know on that one. I would prefer a veteran presence but there just aren't too many out there right now. I've said it before and I'll say it again..."ABC".......anyone but costa:rolleyes:

Bernadeu supposedly can play center. I wonder if the plan is to have him and Killa compete in camp while they draft Blake for the long term.

I have this bad feeling that the current infatution with Kowalski and/or Bernadeau among many here has more to do with how bad Costa was than with anything those two have ever actually done.

Costa was so unimaginably awful that anything looks good in comparison.

Blake is 27, so I don't know that they would draft him and let him sit for more than a year.

If we could get 5 or 6 good years out of him than i'd use the 5th on him for sure.

Costa played badly at times but I didnt think he was as awful as you like to make him out to be. The staff apparently thought enough of him to continue to start him ahead of Kowalski whom many here assume is somehow magically ahead of Costa now on the depth chart.

Yes I know Im in the minority and know nothing of football and Im an idiot etc etc

All I can say is go watch the tape, Costa routinely got manhandled last season. His performance against New England was the single worst game I've ever seen from an o-lineman at the NFL level.

The same argument could be made about Free. Where's the lynch mob for him?

I think they want competition esp along the interior. My guess is they are still looking for someone to compete esp in the draft. I don't do the cap thing and I have no idea where we are and how flexible that can be in regards signing another vet. My guess is they are looking to spend any more money on the defense. Just a SWAG though.

No it could not. Phil Costa graded out as the worst center in football last year, Free was in the top half among left tackles and in the top 5 the year before. At his worst Free was still serviceable, on Costa's best day he might have been suited to start for a low-end BCS conference school.

Free was doing his best to get Romo killed last season, how could that be top half grades for LT?

Whats your definition of servicable for a LT? He was beat several times a game, that cant happen at LT and to make matters worse we gave him a large long term contract after he had one decent season as a RT.

Because casual fans only notice o-linemen when they screw up. Costa got noticed a lot more last season.

First of all his 2009 season was exceptional, he gave up one sack in seven starts as a right tackle. In 2010 he only gave up three sacks in 16 starts as a left tackle. In 2010 he was one of the top 5 tackles in all of football.

Second, Free was not beaten "several times a game". He was beaten several times in certain games, but he "only" gave up eight sacks last year which put him 14th I believe among left tackles. He also went a four game stretch with no sacks given up and another five game stretch with only one. Six of his eight sacks given up occurred in three games.

He definitely didnt play up to his lofty 2009/2010 standards last year but he was MUCH better than Costa.
