Is USC's Taylor Mays a first round Safety?

Like Goose said, the draft is and always has been about measurables. With that in mind, Mays absolutely is a 1st round safety.

Well, I haven't watched enough of the guy to be an expert, so I will defer to you folks if we end up picking him.

Well, here's what I will tell you. My father-in-law, a fan of USC football for well over 30 years says that he aint worth the TP it would take to clean his own backside. He piles on, always in the frame, never on the business end of the tackle and watches the completions as they happen. He thinks he's terrible. Mays thinks he's going to be the next Ronnie Lott but he can't hold Lott's jock. Not my words, the words of a die hard Trojan fan.

He's already laughing at us for considering this guy.

If he had ran a 4.5, would we be having this conversation?

So Mays was not considered a first rounder 6 months ago?

How could he be? He hasn't made a tackle or intercepted a pass since middle school.

HE HAS SPEED, REAL SPEED. If our coaches r worth a daggone then they can potential into Ed Reed.

Plus, will he make plays in the secondary on Sundays? He has average ball skills, and it’s hard to envision a player suddenly turning into a playmaker once he puts on an NFL uniform.

Taylor Mays vs Golden Tate.

We all know who is bigger and faster.

Thoughts?

I think that a players value isn't defined by two plays. I also think that every team in the league has seen those plays and yet a number of them still have Mays graded as a first round pick. Still another thing that I think is that a first round QB and a second round WR hooking up on a couple TDs isn't exactly damning evidence.

If you watch those plays, Mays was in perfect position if only he was looking to make a play on the ball. He was there with the deep help but didn't look for the ball at all.

One positive that you can look at is that Mays covers a lot of ground. He just needs to play the ball instead the receiver.

After you tubing Mays, this is what I like.

He is fast. He looks often times like he is a step faster than everyone else in run covg. His ball skills and covg ability but a guy with those abilities could be your next ed reed if he focuses.

Anybody know what kind of ethic he has? How about his academics?

Tate got him but the dude can play. He looks like an amazing athlete. I don't have problems with guys with his kind of ability.

I do not like that he is always trying to lay people out and never wraps up in tackling. He reminds of the Roy W with speed. And a touch more athleticism. But as a hitter Roy Ws college days were more impressive....

I am not sold on this guy. How about Major wright? Where is he going?

Well, USC is notorious for not really pushing their players, so his work ethic probably needs some tuning. No idea about his academics other than he had a 3.2 GPA in high school, had a 1200 SAT (not sure what scale that's on) and in college he majored in sociology.

Is he graded as a first round pick at safety? Or linebacker?

Facing a potential first round QB and potential second round WR in college is a litmus test of what playing on Sundays is like.

That's the problem.

Being there isn't enough in the NFL, you have to be able to play the football.

Taylor Mays doesn't.

You can't teach that?

Kinda reminds me of the tumble that Rey Malauga had last year. He ended up being pretty damn good as a rook

According to Gosselin and Mays, he grades as a first rounder as a safety. Gil Brandt has him as a fringe 1st rounder, with no mention of possible conversion to LB.

Facing Claussen and Tate may serve as a litmus tests for the facing NFL offenses, but the fact that TD's were scored hardly matters in that respect. Safeties, even good ones, give up TDs from time to time. Mays is definitely not a finished product and he does have a high risk factor, but he grades as a first round pick for a reason. Front offices evaluate guys based on their potential to contribute in the pros, Mays' athleticism gives him that potential.

I don't think so.

Some players have a knack for finding the football, others don't.

Taylor Mays is a hitter who doesn't have a nose for the football.

5 interceptions in four years and 3 came as a freshman.

1 forced fumble and 0 sacks.

Morgan Burnett had 14 interceptions in 3 seasons to go along with 1 forced fumble and 1 sack.

I'd rather draft the production.

The old NFL saying is drafting upside will get you fired.

Jimmy Johnson and other astute personnel people dont agree.

Mays is about as flexible at the hips as a week old stiff. The guy will not be able to cover as the game of today demands. LB or bust.
